MALTON & Norton cruised into round two of the Yorkshire Cup with an eight-try 52-19 win over National League One club Hull Ionians.

The result might be seen as a shock on paper but Ionians also played a National One game at Bishop Stortford and, while other senior clubs in league action did not fulfil their county cup obligations, the Humbersiders brought a line-up comprising several men returning from injury and a number of youngsters.

Nevertheless, Malton spokesman Bill Laidler said there were "a lot of good performances" from his North One East side.

"The most satisfying aspect was that all departments were acting in unison," he said. "Again the younger players, Will Hughes and Charlie Corner, showed their mettle and Tom Foan added his own brand of strong running to the backs."

Malton took an early lead after turning over possession in centre-field.

A strong break by second-row Ali Fothergill took him clear before the backs took over for wing Rob Armitage to cross.

Malton were unfortunate not to get a quick second when centre Foan had the ball knocked from his grasp over the whitewash, but they did touch down again soon after.

They disrupted an Ionians lineout to regain possession and, after two quick rucks, the ball was spread wide with Fothergill taking the scoring pass.

Ionians gradually came more into the game via their more experienced players.

After kicking a 20th-minute penalty to the corner, their initial drive from the lineout drew in the defence and they then spread the ball to the opposite wing for their first try. An excellent drop kick secured the extras.

The visitors then had a period of sustained pressure and on the half-hour equalised in the same corner.

Malton's intention was to keep a tempo and this began to tell on the visitors as the clock wound down.

Just before half-time, Malt attacked from a scrum 25 metres out, a pre-planned move and good handling seeing centre Nick Rangiuira romp over.

Zweli Sodladla converted and, from the restart, Malt immediately added their fourth try. From deep in their own half they opened up through Sodladla and slick handling had the defence clutching at straws, young flanker Corner taking the final pass. Sodladla's conversion made it 26-12.

The second half belonged almost entirely to Malton.

From a scrum on the right they again opened out and a beautiful pass from fly-half Luke Raduva put Corner through for his second try.

Ionians notched a catch-and-drive try from a lineout, but thereafter there was no stopping the hosts.

On the half-hour the referee played an excellent advantage when Ionians knocked on. Armitage grabbed the ball and, using strength and pace, broke free to record his second try from 30 metres.

The conversion was good.

Then scrum-half James Bulmer took a tap penalty 30 metres out and handed on to Raduva, whose crossfield kick bounced in space, with Armitage miraculously snapping it up despite illegal interference before romping away for his hat-trick.

The final try came from another Fothergill break. He handed on to Rangiuira whose try and conversion took them past the half-century mark.
