ACKLAM

Church service - The midweek service of Holy Communion will be at the Church of St John the Baptist each Wednesday at 10am this month.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Tea, Chat & History - The recent Tea, Chat & History session held in the village hall saw about 15 people drop in during the course of the afternoon. The informal meeting included slide shows which will now be a regular feature of the meetings. Homemade cakes and tea was provided by Shirley Brooke. The next meeting will be at 2pm on Monday, November 6.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Domino drive - The first domino drive of the season was held last Thursday and players were welcomed by Elaine Mudd on the door. There were 11 tables in play and David Mudd was the MC. Supper was prepared and served by Anne Tidd and Di Ford. A total of £156 was raised or village hall funds. The next domino drive will be held on Thursday, November 30 at 7.30pm.

Railway returns - Brompton Local History Society’s winter programme started on Wednesday, October 4 and at their opening meeting, Geoff Taylor of Great Broughton spoke on Return of the Railway. The railway in question was the Rosedale Railway built to carry iron ore from Rosedale East Mines to Battersby Junction. It was a remarkable feat of Victorian enterprise and engineering and 2011 was the 150th anniversary of the first railway journey of the Rosedale Railway. To mark the occasion the Kirby, Great Broughton and Ingelby Greenhow Local Group together with the Rosedale History Society set about getting funds to conserve and make it accessible to and understood by more people. They were successful. Geoff Taylor showed photographs ranging in date from 1887 to the present, many taken from an archive assembled by Malcolm Bisby. November’s talk will be from Matt Townend of York University. He is the author of Viking Age Yorkshire. In December, there will be a talk by Linda McCarthy on Charles Dickens. There will be no meeting in January but in February, Gordon Clitheroe will speak about his home town of Pickering. March will see Trevor Pearson talking about the work at Raincliffe Woods and Castle Hill followed by Sheila McGeown, who has been researching Hackness and will be speaking about her work in April. Each meeting starts at 7.30 pm in Brompton Village Hall.

Found - A gold watch has recently been found on the Butts. If anyone has lost a such a watch they should get in touch with Scarborough Police Station where it has been handed in.

Church - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Holy Communion at 9.30am. Coffee will be served afterwards.

BULMER

Bridge Club - There was a tie for first place at the meeting on Thursday, October 5 between Jane Bartlett and Robin Garbutt and the partnership of Anne and John Prest. Both pairs scored 61.3 per cent.

CROPTON

Village hall - The monthly coffee morning on Tuesday, October 3 was well attended. Coffee and cakes were served by committee members and friends. On Friday, October 6, Malton Male Voice Choir, conducted by Vivien Wilcock, gave a performance. They sang many favourite songs and were joined by Rachel and Brenda with Moira on the keyboard. Tea and biscuits were served during the interval and a raffle was drawn.

FARNDALE

Charity evening - There will be a charity Country and Western evening at the Lion Inn, Blakey on Friday, November 3 at 7.30pm. Music will be provided by Alf Berry. There will also be an auction and raffle. Tickets cost £6 which includes a supper. All proceeds will go to the air ambulance. HELMSLEY

Ladies Luncheon Club - The first meeting after the summer break was held at The Pheasant, Harome, and was attended by 46 members and two guests. The president introduced Maria Gloss who gave an illustrated talk together about Sir Titus Salt and the history of Salts mill. The club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at The Pheasant and would welcome new members. For any information phone 01439 770010.

Fish and chips – There will be a fish and chips supper in aid of the RNLI at the Feathers Hotel on Thursday, October 19 from 7pm. Tickets are £12 and includes the supper and coffee. HOVINGHAM

Open day - There will be a Community Open Day at the village hall on Thursday, October 19 from 9.30am to 2pm. There will be presentations by Ryedale District Council on broadband and community grants, Ryevitalise on restoring the habitats of the River Rye, Hovingham Action Group on running a community market, North Yorkshire County Council’s director of health Lincoln Sargeant will talk about public health strategy and Thornton-le-Dale Ukulele players will be present. There will be information stalls by a wide variety of organisations including community support and funding advice. It includes a free lunch and refreshments. Market - The monthly village market was held on Saturday with more than 50 stalls. New stall holders did well and the RNLI had a successful day with plenty of Christmas card sales. Scackleton Church, who ran the cafe, made an excellent profit and Josh the busker was in fine voice. The next market is on Saturday, November 4.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met last Thursday at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive for the Hazlehurst competition. The judge was Malcolm Blenkey, from Saltburn, who awarded Bob Ordidge the highest marks for his three images. Bob commented on the high standard of the entries. The next meeting at the club is on Thursday, October 19 when entries for the open competition will be required.

In tune - The Friday Rehearsal Orchestra has started its new season at the Memorial Hall, at 7.30pm each Friday. New members are welcome in strings and brass sections. Flower festival - All Saints Church’s flower festival will be held from Saturday, October 14 to Sunday, October 22. It will have the theme A Walk Through the Seasons. It will feature knitted and crocheted displays of the flora and fauna of spring, summer, autumn and winter, which have been handmade by the Kirkbymoorside Wool Crafters. Children are welcome to join the hunt for the hidden wildlife. There will be a preview evening with wine and music on Friday at 7pm. The church will be open from 10am to 4pm. Tea and biscuits will be available.

Domino drive - The bowling club will hold a domino drive in the club house on Saturday, October 21 at 7.30pm Dinner Club - The Wednesday dinner club at the Methodist church is for older people and those living alone. Phone Jean Lishman on 01751 432111 for further details.

Harvest auction - The annual harvest auction will be held in the Jolly Farmer pub on Saturday at 7.30pm. Donation of fruit, vegetables and home baking to sell can be taken to the pub on the day.

MALTON

Bridge club - The first session of Malton Bridge Club’s championship pairs competition was won by John Hayton and Philip Mason with a score of 59.7 per cent. Graham Burgess and Keith Freeman were runners-up with 56.9 per cent. In third place were Derek Fox and Richard Hilton with 55.6 per cent. This week sees the start of the positional pairs competition.

MIDDLETON

Lacemakers - Pickering Lacemakers will be holding its monthly meeting in the village hall on Saturday, October 21 from 10am to 3pm.

NAWTON

Prize bingo - Harome bowling club will hold a prize bingo in the village hall on Saturday, October 21 at 7.30pm. 

NEWTON-ON-RAWCLIFFE

Refreshments - Homemade soup, refreshments, tea and coffee will be available in the village hall between noon and 4pm on Sunday. There will also be a tombola. The event is for village hall funds.

Craft and chat - The village Hall will stage a craft and chat evening on Thursday, October 19 at 7pm. Tea or coffee with biscuits will also be available. Entry is £2.

Social evening - Gordon Clitheroe will present and illustrated talk called The Changing Faces of Pickering in the village hall on Thursday, October 26 at 7.30pm. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available. Entry is £3.

NORTON

Spreading the Word - Afternoon Around The Word will be held at Bethel Methodist Church on Saturday, from 2pm to 5pm. The afternoon will be led by the Rev David Morris from Shipley.

PICKERING

Poppy fund - The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion collected £13,287.59 for the 2016-17 annual Poppy Appeal fund. The branch will have its Champley’s Yard headquarters, open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 9am each day, selling teas and coffee. Branch members will be busy during this weekend’s annual War Weekend. On Saturday they will be selling breakfasts, burgers, bacon and sausage sandwich’s, general refreshments, plus teas and coffee from 9am at the WRVS Hungate Centre. Dance night - The Recreation Club, Mill Lane, will be hosting a dance night featuring1940’s A-Train Swing and Lilli De Carlo on Saturday from 7pm until late. Fleamarket - The fleamarket and gift fair, supporting Yorkshire Air Ambulance, is open every day this week up to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Gooseberry talk - Ian Woodcock will give an illustrated talk on the history of Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show at an open meeting of Pickering Horticultural Society on Saturday, October 21 at the Memorial Hall, at 7pm. Admission will be £2 which will also include refreshments. There will also be a raffle to raise funds for the society.

Shoebox appeal - The annual shoebox appeal has been launched for the Pickering district. Leaflets may be found at Potter Hill Methodist Church, Reeds newsagents and the library. Completed shoeboxes may be left at the Methodist Church or 14 Willow Court, Pickering, the home of organiser Daphne Bowes.

Super draw - There was no winners in last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Super Draw. The numbers were 10, 23 and 14. This week’s draw will be increased to £375. The October monthly consolation prize draw was made last week for the £50 prize which will be shared by Mary Armstrong and Jonathon Bointon. Their winning numbers were 10 and 23.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday, at 7.30pm.

Kirk Theatre - Tickets are on sale at the box office or via the website www.kirktheatre.co.uk for the annual wartime show ENSA – Memory Lane which will be held until Sunday. On Saturday, October 27 there will be bingo evening in aid if the Friends of the Theatre and Pickering Guides. Doors open at 6.30pm with eyes down at 7pm. On Thursday, November 2 there will be a performance by the Thornton-le-Dale Ukeleles at 7.30pm, doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from members of the group or pay on the door on the night. Tickets are now on sale for, A Night at the Music Hall which will be presented by Pickering Musical Society on Saturday, November 18 at 7.30pm.

Plant talk - The Hardy Plant Group of the Horticultural Society will meeting on Thursday, October 19 in the Memorial Hall, at 7.30pm when Bridlington-based Paul Robinson will give a talk called The Laughing Gardener.

Farmers’ market -The monthly farmers’ market will take place in the Market Place on Thursday, October 19 from 8.30am.

History day - The Pickering branch of the WEA will present a history day school on the Norman Conquest of Yorkshire with tutor Dr Robert Wright on Saturday, October 28 in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, from 10am to 4pm. There will be a £25 fee.

Tribute night -Tickets are now on sale for tribute night The Great Pretender at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, November 4 at 7.30pm when Steve Littlewood will perform the songs of Freddie Mercury. RILLINGTON

Quiz time - Three teams playing for £28 in prize money took part in Jennie’s mega quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 53 points were Sue’s Crew plus two. Second were Team @ the Bar and third The Who?. The £10 jackpot was won by The Who? The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz were Col and Mike and the jackpot was another rollover.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, led both morning services and preached from Matthew 21, Jesus’ parable of the vineyard. At the traditional service of Holy Communion at 9.30am, Jean Donovan led the intercessions and assisted with the chalice. Frances Simons read and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns. The welcomers were Tricia Winlayson and Elizabeth Chapman. Refreshments between the services were served by Sue Johnson and Enid Plevey. At the 11am modern service, Steve Raettig led the sung worship and the intercessions and Esme Raettig read. Liz Cremer was the welcomer and refreshments after the service were served by Andrea Raettig and Elizabeth Bradley.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s - Morning worship was led by Barbara Grice, who took Thankfulness as her topic. Sidespersons were Sue Mennell and Betty Flinton. Music was supplied by Bill Hyndford on his guitar and the lesson was read by Christine Ashton, who served the coffee at the close of the service with Barbara Grice and helpers. The harvest festival will be celebrated at St Hilda’s on Thursday, October 19, with the schoolchildren’s service at 9.30am and the general service at 7pm. Refreshments will be served at the end of the evening service. Celebrations will continue with Holy Communion on Sunday, October 22 at 9am when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate.

Letters draw - The Sherburn FC draw on Saturday produced the letters A L V. As there was no winner, this week’s prize fund is £240.

Community club - There will be a session of prize bingo on Saturday with books on sale from 7.15pm and eyes down at 8pm. This event is strictly those aged 18 or over.

Lunch - The Senior Citizen Luncheon Club will meet in the Chapel Hall on Wednesday, October 18 from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport can be provided within the village by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Messy Church - Youngsters will have a light party on Saturday. It starts with tea at 4.45pm and will include worship, songs, stories and crafts.

Live band East Riding - The band Hi Heel Sneakers will be performing 60s and 70s, soul, funk, blues and rock music at the East Riding pub on Saturday, October 21.

Methodist news - The Monday praise and prayer was led by Jean Brown. Anyone wanting a copy of the prayer guide sheet should ask Jean or Christine. The donations at the Tuesday coffee morning continue to be given to the Christmas shoebox appeal. Sunday worship was led by Bruce Clark, who spoke to the young people about the rules and how Jesus gave the golden rule, ‘do to others as you would have them do to you.’ Steward Elizabeth Aconley also read the lesson from Matthew’s Gospel of the parable of the tenants. Music was provided by Chris Cade on the organ and Robin Magowan and Bruce Clark on guitar. Refreshments were enjoyed afterwards in the hall. Sunday’s service at 10.30am will be led by Margaret Crofts.

Christmas shoeboxes - It is planned to fill the Christmas shoeboxes on Tuesday, October 24 from 1.30pm in the chapel hall. The organisers are looking for items to put in the boxes and include small cuddly toys, which need to have the CE mark, balls, stationery, toiletries like soap, but not liquid, flannels, toothpaste, combs, hair slides, bobbles, skipping ropes and any small toy which is not battery operated or war-related. SINNINGTON

Concert - Sinnington People’s Guild opens the 2017-2018 session on Tuesday, October 17 at 7.15pm when the Kirkbymoorside Community Band, together with the Northern Ryedale Singers will be giving a concert. There will be upper after the concert. There is no charge but a collection will be taken for guild funds.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Ladies Group - Libby Butler from Helmsley was the speaker at the latest monthly meeting. She spoke about how pearls are formed and farmed. She also showed members the difference between seawater pearls and freshwater ones. No two pearls are the same. The freshwater ones come mainly from China and USA and are smaller than the seawater pearls which come mainly from Japan and China. Libby some pearl necklaces of different colours there are. She does rethreading work at her shop in Helmley. She said her ambition and passion is to go to Japan to see the whole pearl process. Tea and biscuits were served by Margaret, Joyce and Pat. The meeting will be a meal at Balderson’s Café on Thursday, November 2, noon for 12.30pm.

Bridge Club - The competition on Monday, October 2. In first place were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 61.1 per cent. Runners-up with 59 per cent were George and Pat Donnor.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday, October 28 at 7.30pm to raise funds for the village hall. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits. Another domino drive is planned for Wednesday, November 4.

Jumble sale - Money raised from a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, October 28 from 10am to noon will go towards village hall funds.

WI REPORT

Ebberston & Allerston - The September meeting in Allerston was well attended. Jill Smith of Binnington Blooms, who grows country garden flowers on the family dairy farm near Scarborough, was the speaker. She arrived with several buckets of flowers which scented the air in the hall. Jill gave a talk on the many different flowers and greenery that she grows annually, together with lots of ideas for 'mixing and matching' flowers to suit every occasion. Jill is a member of Flowers from the Farm, a network of more than 500 growers throughout the UK united in their passion for growing and selling home grown cut flowers. They pool their knowledge and ideas both online and at meetings and get together to create displays at various shows. Jill donated four bunches of flowers for the raffle. The member’s competition for a single bloom was won by Pat Hanby.
