A TRAIN has been renamed in honour of Yorkshire soldiers.

Northern renamed one of its Type 150 trains The Yorkshire Warrior, at the weekend in honour of the Yorkshire Regiment, and unveiled the new nameplate on platform 8 at York Railway Station on Saturday.

Members of the Yorkshire Regiment’s band performed at the naming ceremony along with a guard of honour comprised of twenty Yorkshire Regiment soldiers.

They welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Barry Dodd CBE, the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Barbara Boyce and the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, Simon Wrightson on to the newly named Yorkshire Warrior.

Mike Paterson, Northern’s regional director and ex Royal Navy Captain, was instrumental in setting up the partnership between the two Yorkshire institutions.

He said: "We are proud to be Northern and that sentiment is something that resonates well with the Yorkshire Regiment, which is steeped in heritage and tradition. We’re delighted to have joined forces with the regiment and as an active employer of ex-service personnel, we’re sure that the Yorkshire Warrior is a fitting tribute.”

Also present were a number of families of soldiers from The Yorkshire Regiment as well as Lieutenant Colonel Ian Astley.

Lt Col Astley said: "It is a great privilege to be representing Yorkshire’s Warriors here today. This train will carry our name and message across the county and beyond and will help to reinforce the strong bond we have between the region and the Regiment.

"I know the soldiers in Catterick and those deployed in theatre will be rightly proud and pleased to see our cap badge and name on this regional train."
