A YOUNG girl from near Selby has had her hair chopped off and donated it to charity.

Ten-year-old Victoria Powell, from Barlby, had about 12 inches of her hair cut off at the Body Shop at York Designer Outlet, where her mother Susan works.

She has now donated it to the Little Princess Trust, which makes free wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.

In addition, the Barlby Community Primary School pupil has raised about £300 in sponsorship for the charity.

Her father Steve said: “It was quite a shock for her initially. She’s had long hair for several years. To have it cut off in public is a brave thing to do. We are very proud of her.”

Victoria’s hair was cut by a hairdresser from Tops Hair Studio in Fulford for free.

Steve says it was Victoria’s idea to have her hair cut short to donate to the charity.
