COUNCILLORS in York have launched a petition to try and save their local swimming pool.

As reported in The Press this week, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT), are set to close the New Earswick Swimming Pool from March next year, as it was running at a loss and would cost too much to repair.

A spokesman said: "We cannot commit to the funding it will need to keep the building and equipment running in the long-term. The swimming pool is not open to the public, being used only by pre-booked groups from in and around York, it makes a loss of £132,000 a year, and would cost another £1.3 million to repair."

On Friday, Huntington and New Earswick’s three Liberal Democrat councillors - Keith Orrell, Chris Cullwick and Carol Runciman - launched a petition calling on the trust to reconsider their plans.

Cllr Orrell said: "We would urge the Trust to work with users and local people to explore ways of maintaining a facility which has served local people for 50 years.
