MORE than 10,000 runners will be pounding the streets in around York tomorrow.

More than 7,000 people have entered this year’s Yorkshire Marathon, and they will be joined by more than 4,000 participants in the Yorkshire 10 Mile, which was first launched in 2015.

This year will also see the first runner taking part in an event to raise money for York women’s charity Kyra.

Heather, 34, from Pocklington, is a service user at the charity, and said she was proud to be the first person to raise money for it, by running in the 10 mile race.

She said: “Honestly, I can’t wait for it to be over, so I don’t have to think about it any more. I’m very much looking forward to it though.

“I’ve probably raised £400 so far - £125 pays for solicitors to come and talk to women at Kyra, £300 pays for a programme on self esteem for a whole year, so it’s good to know that’s what it’s going to go on, that’s what’s going to keep me running.”

Yvonne Copley, from Kyra, said: “When a member offers support in raising much-needed funds, it is somehow so much more poignant.

“We are delighted Heather is giving us her backing and that she is so far on her journey to recovery, that she feels strong enough to do this. We wish her well and I know Kyra will be cheering her along.”

Dan Winn, 20, will be running the marathon in memory of his friend Tristan Powell, who died three years ago, aged 17, after a struggle with depression.

Dan, who is from York but studying at Sheffield Hallam University, is raising money for York Mind.

The route starts and finishes at the University of York, and travels into the city along University Road, entering through Walmgate Bar, past York Minster and exiting the city through Monk Bar.

Rolling road closures will be in place throughout the event.
