Coffee morning - Bob and Debbie Cook, of Manor Garth, held a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday, September 29 and raised £535 - a big increase on the 2016 figure of £392.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Pop-up market - There will be a pop-up market in the village hall on Saturday from 10.30am to 3pm.

Harvest Festival - The harvest festival service at the Methodist Chapel was taken by Rosamund Dyson from Scarborough and Barrie Richmond from Mansfield. The lessons were read by Katrina Lane and Joan Fletcher. A harvest reading was given by Eunice Morton. Two solos were sung by Mandy Clayton. Jean Lishman was the organist. The collection, taken by Jill Hiatt and Malcolm Leckenby, together with donations, amounted to £250 for chapel funds. After the service everyone was invited to Weighell Cottage for refreshments. All the donated harvest produce was taken by Rosamund to the Rainbow Centre in Scarborough.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The first morning work task after the summer as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company's management of Bishop Hagg Wood was tackled on Saturday. Four people collected wood and burned brack. The next work task will be on Saturday, October 28.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday, will be an 11am Matins conducted by the Benefice reader Pat Wood. There will be a meeting of All Saints fundraisers on Wednesday, October 11 at 10.30am at Kings Head Cottage to discuss the Christmas fest which combines the Christmas tree festival and the Christmas fair. The fest preview will be on Friday, December 1 and the fair on Saturday, December 2. Messy Church, which is for families throughout the Upper Derwent area, will be held on Saturday in Hutton Buscel Village Hall from 4pm to 5.30pm. There is no need to book but children should be accompanied by an adult.

Spoken word – Brompton-by-Sawdon MET is busy preparing for its annual spoken word evening on Saturday, October 14 in Brompton Village Hall. The evening will be a celebration of words – verse, prose, stories, limericks among others. Entrance is by ticket only, available from Bob and Marylyn Muir, phone 01723 850412. Tickets are priced at £6 and include supper.

BULMER

Bridge Club - Sheila Briske and Jane Bartlett won the session on Thursday, September 28 with 60.8 per cent. Second were Diane Cooper and Les Allan on 60 per cent.

HELMSLEY

Luncheon club - Helmsley and District Men’s Luncheon Club held its first meeting of the new season on Tuesday, September 26 at the Feathers. Twenty-five members heard a talk on flying gliders by local member Nick Gaunt. The club meets on the last Tuesday of the month at the Feathers. HOVINGHAM

Market anniversary - The eighth anniversary of the monthly village market will be celebrated on Saturday. The first village market started in October 2009. New stallholders are Hel’s Bowls supplying soup using locally produced ingredients and Derek Jarman and Sue Johnson with handmade jigsaws and drawing templates. This community stall is the Royal National Lifeboat Institution selling charity Christmas cards. Regular busker Josh will be performing and the community cafe will be run by Scackleton Church. The volunteer market manager is Graham Mason.

Harvest festival - A harvest festival service will be held in the Methodist Chapel on Sunday, October 15 at 10.30am. It will be led by the Rev Mark Haynes, of Kirkbymoorside. The following evening, at 6.30pm, another service will be conducted by Stillington farmer and lay preacher Robin Jackson. The produce will be auctioned by Keith Warters before a supper.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Repair café - Kirkbymoorside Environment Group’s first repair café event on Saturday, September 23 got off to a good start. Twenty-two people went, 18 of them with things to repair, and 22 items were either repaired or given advice about. A total of £26 was raised by the café and £36 from donations. These funds will pay for the hire of the hall, and the remainder will go into the group’s general fund for future events. The next repair café will be held on Saturday, November 11 from 10am to 2pm in The Moorside Room, Church Street. For further details email kmegadmin@phonecoop.coop Volunteer repairers are needed.

Menzown - Members are invited to speak on any subject of their choice at the next meeting on Monday, October 9 at the King’s Head Hotel, 7pm for 7.30pm.

Bridge club - At the latest game Gill and Trevor Hardcastle and Judith O’Donnell with David Whitehead tied for top North/South with 56 per cent. Bo and Tony Simpson win East/West with 63 per cent. Anne Smith and Graeme Matthew were second with 55 per cent. Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth took play of the week award

Ladies Fellowship - Members of the fellowship will have their annual get-together with friends from the Tuesday Group in the Methodist Church schoolroom on Tuesday, October 10 at 7.30pm. The fellowship will provide the faith supper.

Club act - Dave Lesley will provide the entertainment at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday with O J Reynolds booked for the following Saturday, October 14. Both start at 8.30pm.

Antiques - The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will hold an evening of antiques with a difference with Edward Harrison on Friday, at the Kings Head, 7pm for 7.30pm start. Entry is £5 per person.

Flower festival - All Saints Church’s flower festival will be held from Saturday, October 14 to Sunday, October 22. It will have the theme A Walk Through the Seasons. It will feature knitted and crocheted displays of the flora and fauna of spring, summer, autumn and winter, which have been handmade by the Kirkbymoorside Wool Crafters. Children are welcome to join the hunt for the hidden wildlife. There will be a preview evening with wine and music on Friday, October 13 at 7pm. The church will be open from 10am to 4pm. Tea and biscuits will be available.

Coffee morning - The Marie Curie coffee morning at Ryedale Garage is on Friday, October 13 from 9.30am to 12.30pm. There will be stalls selling cakes and Christmas cards as well as a tombola and raffle.

KIRKDALE

Harvest thanks - The harvest thanksgiving service at St Gregory’s Minster on Sunday at 4pm will be a choral service. An informal supper will be shared in the church afterwards. There will be no 11am service on Sunday.

LEAVENING

Coffee morning - The Macmillan Cancer Care coffee morning in the Methodist School room on Saturday, September 30 raised £340.

Harvest festival – Mike Sellers will lead the harvest service on Sunday at 2.30pm in the church. There will be refreshment afterwards.

LOCKTON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in aid of Lockton and Levisham playing field refurbishment in the village hall on Saturday, October 14 at 7.30pm. Admission is £2 and includes supper.

MALTON

Bridge - The chairman Tricia Pearce, vice-chairman and treasurer Philip Mason and secretary Richard Hilton were all re-elected at the annual general meeting of Malton Bridge Club. In the bridge session that followed, the winners were John Bramall and Richard Hilton, followed by Gill Oxendale and Sheila Johnson, with Rob Ashdown and Madeleine Webber in third place. The club’s competition season begins this week with the first session of the championship pairs.

MARTON AND NORMANBY

Annual meeting - Marton and Normanby Gardening Club’s annual general meeting was held last month. The chairman, Bill Tweddle, who reported on a successful produce show held on August Bank Holiday weekend which run in conjunction with the village hall summer fair. The treasurer’s report was read out by Claire Lund. It was agreed that admission charges will now be £2 and a yearly membership joining fee will be £8. Officers from the previous year have all agreed to stand again. The speaker at Marton Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 10 will be Mike Kinnes who will give a talk called Autumn Colour. Club membership cards entitle the bearer discounts in local garden centres.

NAWTON

Prize bingo - The monthly prize bingo to raise funds for the village hall takes place on Saturday in the village hall at 7.30pm.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Domino drive – Dominoes will be played in the village hall on Thursday, October 12 at 7.30pm. Tea, or coffee, with biscuits available. Admission is £1.50.

Social evening - Gordon Clitheroe will present and illustrated talk called The Changing Faces of Pickering in the village hall on Thursday, October 26 at 7.30pm. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available. Entry is £3.

PICKERING

Gooseberry talk - Ian Woodcock will give an illustrated talk on the history of Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show at an open meeting of Pickering Horticultural Society on Saturday, October 21 at the Memorial Hall, at 7pm. Admission will be £2 which will also include refreshments. There will also be a raffle to raise funds for the society.

Shoebox appeal - The annual shoebox appeal has been launched for the Pickering district. Leaflets may be found at Potter Hill Methodist Church, Reeds newsagents and the library. Completed shoeboxes may be left at the Methodist Church or 14 Willow Court, Pickering, the home of organiser Daphne Bowes.

Apple weekend - The annual R V Roger Apple Weekend will take place at its plant centre in Malton Road on Saturday and Sunday, with tastings, juicing, an artist in residence and guidance from some top fruit experts on orchard planning, pruning, and selection.

Poppy Appeal - The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion are looking for volunteers to sell poppies in the Market Place, and at the railway station during the annual War Weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday October 13, 14 and 15. Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club Weekly Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 34, 1 and 35. This week’s draw will be increased to £300.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday, October 15 at 7.30pm.

ENSA – On Saturday, October 27 there will be bingo evening in aid if the Friends of the Theatre and Pickering Guides. Doors open at 6.30pm with eyes down at 7pm.

Wartime emporium - The Memorial Hall is presenting a Wartime Emporium during the three-day War Weekend on October 13, 14, and 15 to raise money towards hall funds.

Domino league - Pickering Domino League resumes on Wednesday, October 11 at 8.45pm. It will run until Wednesday, December 20. The second half of the season will start on Wednesday, January 3 and finish on Wednesday, March 14. The Jack Gilbank Trophy knock-out will start on Wednesday, March 21 with the final being held at the Conservative Club on Wednesday, April 18 at 8pm.

Fishkeepers - There will be a meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society on Wednesday, October 11 at 7.30pm.

RIEVAULX

Harvest thanksgiving - Services of thanksgiving for the harvest are being held at Rievaulx Methodist Church this weekend. On Sunday the all age worship service at 10.30am will be led by Liz Whitfield from Bentham. Any gifts of fruit or vegetables people would like to bring will be received. The worship at 6.30pm will also be led by Mrs Whitfield. The services will be continued on Tuesday, October 10 at 7pm when John and Sheila Bainbridge from Barningham, near Richmond will be the leaders. After the service there will be a harvest supper in the village hall followed by the sale of produce. The proceeds will be divided between The Children's Society, Caring for Life, which is a Christian charity based at Crag House Farm, near Leeds, and Ryedale Food Bank.

RILLINGTON

Coffee morning - A coffee morning held in Woodlands Community Centre raised £310 for MacMillan Cancer Care.

Charity bingo - A prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre raise £470, including donations, for Ryedale Dog Rescue. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo in the centre is on Wednesday, October 25 and will be for Settrington Bowls Club.

Quiz time - Jennie’s Sunday night quiz at the Fleece Inn was won by Team @ the Bar. The jackpot was a roll over. There will be a mega quiz at the pub on Friday at 9pm. There will be cash prizes down to third place and a cash jackpot. Entry is £2 per person and includes hot supper.

Live act - Jimi Hendrix tribute act Carl Robinson will be performing at the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

SEAMER

St Martin’s - The Rev Richard Firth, assisted by reader Elizabeth Moreland, presided at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. Elizabeth preached on the gospel reading of Jesus’ parable of the two sons, one whom offered to help in his father’s vineyard but did nothing. The second son at first refused to help but later agreed to work. Janet Lamb gave a bible reading, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion. Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons, and Julie Stephenson served refreshments after the service. Elizabeth Moreland also preached at the 11am service of modern worship, which she also led. Mary Otway gave the bible reading and the sung worship was led by John Grice (guitar) with Steve Raettig (keyboard), Sue Grice (bass) and John Taylor (drums). Liz Cremer ran the Sunday Club, Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

New Wine Day - St Martin’s will host a New Wine Women’s Day from 10am to 4pm on Saturday. The theme will be ‘Dream Bigger’.

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Lorraine Booth. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Alan Dunnington and the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Jim Lawson who read from Philippians and Sheila Gray, who read from Matthew’s Gospel. In her sermon Lorraine spoke about authority and she told the congregation about her Christian life and the authority she had to get to become a local preacher. The preacher on Sunday at 10.30am will be the Rev Robert Whitfield. The monthly coffee morning will be on Saturday at 10.30am.

SHERBURN

Examination success - Barbara Grice, who has just celebrated her 80th birthday, has received certificate from the University of West London, London College of Music Examinations for passing Grade 3 of Ukulele Performance with Merit. Her teacher was William Hyndford, a registered tutor, based in Scarborough.

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters K P and S. There was no winner so this week’s prize fund will be £180.

Community Club - There will be an evening of karaoke and disco at the Community and Sports Club from 9pm on Saturday. The bingo night will be on Saturday, October 14 with books on sale from 7.15pm and eyes down at 8pm. The event is strictly for people aged 18 and over.

Coffee morning - The village hall was full to support the coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event, organised by Christine Ashton and Carol Stephenson, raised £1,010.79. Children from Sherburn C of E School helped on the day. Methodist news - A card had been received from Westway Open Arms food bank who received gifts from the harvest festival. A box for the food bank is always available in the Link if anyone has any groceries to offer. The Chapel Fellowship met at Forge Villa on Monday and Sandra Cade led a reflection on praying the 23rd Psalm. The new minister, the Rev Kevin Ridd, took the Holy Communion service on Sunday. The welcomer was Jean Brown and the steward was Liz Aconley, who also assisted with the communion. Readers were Chris Cade, Jean Brown and Sandra Cade. Chris Cade played the organ and Christine Fenwick operated the audio-visual equipment. Rev Ridd took actions speak louder than words as his theme. After worship coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Bruce Clark.

Messy Church - Youngsters will have a light party on Saturday, October 14. It starts with tea at 4.45pm and will include worship, songs, stories and crafts.

Luncheon club - Members of the Senior Citizen Luncheon Club will meet in the Chapel Hall on Wednesday, October 18, 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport can be provided within the village by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

St Hilda’s Church - Barbara Grice will lead the service at St Hilda’s on Sunday at 10.30am. The 1st Sherburn Rainbows and Brownies have become local champions for the Dollywood Fundation Imagination Library. This is a book gifting scheme and means that any child up to five in the village who is registered will receive books in the post to keep every month until their fith birthday. Families with children aged up to five invited to join the group for stories and activities from 6pm to 7pm one Thursday each term. The first session will be on October 12.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - George and Pat Donnor won the competition on Monday, September 25 with 60.4 per cent. In second place were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 56.9 per cent.

WEAVERTHORPE

Jumble sale - Funds raised from a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday between 1pm and 2.30pm will be divided between village organisations. Admission Adults is £1 and includes a drink and biscuit. Accompanied children are free. Jumble can be donated on Friday between 7.30pm and 8.30pm or from 11.30am on Saturday. Electrical items cannot be accepted.

WOMBLETON

Quiz - Wombleton Sports and Recreation Club is hosting a quiz night on Friday, October 13 at 7.30pm in the village hall. Entry is £2.50 per person for teams of up to four. A light supper is included. Jumble sale - Funds for the village hall will be raised at a jumble sale in the hall on Saturday, October 28 from 10am to noon.

WI REPORT

Marton & Normanby - The September meeting was opened by the president Jean Bell. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of member Gwen Holmes from Marton, who had recently died. Jean spoke about two enjoyable trips during the summer - one to Sion Hall, Thirsk and the treasure hunt around Kirby Misperton followed by an evening meal. Results were read out from Ryedale Show and the formal meeting concluded with the treasurer’s report read out by Wendy Fielding. 

YCA REPORT

Rillington and District -Thirteen members were present at the September meeting of Rillington and District YCA held in the village hall. The speaker was Rosie Stephenson of Ryedale Dog Rescue, accompanied by Diane Illingworth. Ryedale Dog Rescue was set up in 2005 to rescue and rehome abandoned dogs from the Ryedale and East Yorkshire area. It has been a registered charity since 2007 and on average rehomes 60 to 80 dogs a year. Since its inception they have now rehomed 950 dogs. Barbara Grice thanked Rosie for her interesting talk and slide show. Rosie judged the competition for a photograph of a pet and awarded first prize to Valerie Gilbert, second was Barbara Grice and third Caroline Neuff. The nine members who had attended the Kirby Misperton lunch had enjoyed both the fashion show and meal. Sherburn Ladies Group and Weaverthorpe YCA have been invited to the October meeting and Mell supper. The evening's hostesses were Carol Stephenson and Chris Ashton. Marjorie Grice sold tickets for the raffle.
