STRONG winds have been sweeping across the region overnight, bringing down trees and branches in North and East Yorkshire.

It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for wind for Yorkshire and the Humber for the period between 9pm yesterday and 9am today.

The national weather service said that westerly winds would see gusts of 40mph to 50mph and locally more than 60mph.

At about 5.35am, a fire crew from Huntington was called to a report of a large branch down in Corban Lane, Wigginton, near York. Manpower was used to remove the branch from the road.

A branch has also snapped off a tree and landed on the road between Burnt Yates and Summerbridge, near Harrogate.

In East Yorkshire, police have received reports of a number of trees down, including in George Street, Driffield, on the A164 between Kirkburn and Driffield and on the B1230 between North Cave and Walkington.

Another tree has fallen on the A1174 between Bishop Burton and Killingwoldgraves roundabout.
