TRIBUTES have been paid to a “true gentleman” who has died, aged 88.

Doug Gibson, who lived in Thornton-le-Dale, died on September 14. He was a former head teacher from County Durham and moved to Ryedale when he retired in 1984.

Having been a member of the Redcar Repertory in his youth, Mr Gibson took the opportunity in his retirement to join Thornton Players and played one of the lead roles in their many productions

His daughter, Chris McKenna, said: “He was a popular figure in the area through his involvement with Thornton Players, a bowls correspondent for the Gazette & Herald and a member of Malton and Norton Golf Club.

“He never lost his interest in education and had a part-time job as an assessor of Student Teachers in North Yorkshire as well as being a local school governor.

“He was an avid reader and in early retirement was the voice of many talking books for the local community. Sadly his eyesight failed, but he became one of their best customers through the library.

“His greatest love by far was his family and he took enormous pleasure from reading to and entertaining the children.”

Doug, who had two daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, also leaves his wife of almost 65 years, Rita, who is also a retired teacher.

Chris said: “Many have described him as a true gentleman, who will be remembered for his humanity, generosity, kindness and great humour. He was a man with a big heart.

“He was gregarious and so popular. There was no one who didn’t like dad.”
