RESIDENTS who were assured an overgrown public field would be cut after months of neglect say they are frustrated it still has not been done.

As reported recently in The Press, the Melrosegate playing field, off Fourth Avenue opposite St Aelred’s Church in Tang Hall, has been branded an eyesore by local residents after months of neglect.

Sue Lacy is one of those unhappy with the situation, and is involved with a Facebook group - Friends Of Melrosegate Field - after repeated appeals to the council to tidy the area came to nothing.

The playing field became council responsibility in May, but had not been cut. When The Press contacted the authority following Sue's previous complaint, they said the grass would be cut, but this had not yet happened.

Sue said: "It was due to be done last week, but nothing has been said, nothing has been done.

"I've emailed and tried to speak to the council again, but had no answer. Everyone involved in it has been let down. The council don't seem interested."

Sue said the grass on the field had continued to grow, more litter had been dropped, and further flytipping was a concern, after rubbish had been left on the overgrown field in recent months.

She said: "You would hope the council might do that and it wouldn't get littered so much if you could see the ground.

"It's going to take some clearing now, I can't see how a cutter can get through those really tough weeds easily. People have been going on the Facebook page messaging and asking why they haven't been that week and saying they were cutting it fine - I said fine would be nice. It's frustrating. It's getting wet now, and it's going to take some cutting."

A spokesman for City of York Council said: "Unfortunately the contractor was unable to cut the grass last week.

"Weather permitting it will be cut this week."
