TALENTED youngsters are to be recognised with an award in memory of two young jockeys.

The Bright Young Star Award, sponsored by McClarrons insurance brokers, will be presented at the Pride of Malton & Norton Awards 2017.

Nominations are now open for the annual Pride of Malton & Norton Awards, with winners to be announced on November 4, at the Talbot Hotel’s York House Marquee.

Now in its eighth year, the Bright Young Star Award is awarded in memory of two young local jockeys, Jan Wilson and Jamie Kyne, who were killed in a flat fire in Norton in September 2009, to celebrate the talents of local individuals.

Insurance brokers McClarrons, whose head office is based in Malton, has sponsored the Bright Young Star Award from the start of the awards.

Business director Sean McClarron said: “These awards always make you feel so proud to be part of the community.

"It’s the people who make Malton and Norton such a vibrant and fulfilling place to live and work and this event is a chance to recognise this.”

Last year’s winner was Chloe Shipley, a dancer whose fundraising effort saw her raise around £17,000 for cancer research in memory of her mother.

David McDonald, general manager at The Talbot Hotel, said: “We are extremely proud to be hosting this prestigious event at York House and are very much looking forward to celebrating the hard work of all of the nominees and winners.”

There will also be a charity raffle and auction held on the evening with the money raised being split between Ryedale Food Bank and Ryedale Dog Rescue.

The awards categories include: Bright Young Star, Customer Service Award, Teacher of the Year, Business Personality of the Year, Charity of the Year, Established Business, Local Hero, Volunteer of the Year, Food/Drink Award and Dedication to Sport.

Nominations are invited from a variety of sources, including individuals, charities and companies. The finalists will be shortlisted by the judging panel before the winners are announced at the awards dinner.

Nominations can be made until September 29. Forms can be picked up from most shops and businesses around Malton and Norton including the Gazette & Herald office in Yorkersgate, and returned to a dedicated collection point.

Nominations can also be emailed to David at the Talbot Hotel at gm@talbotmalton.co.uk.
