A RYEDALE pet care company has helped raise £20,000 for an antibiotic research charity.

Burgess Pet Care, a Pickering-based pet food supplier and manufacturer, sponsored the Burgess Supadog Bark de Triomphe, a dog race with a difference, held at Beverley Racecourse.

It raised £20,000 for York-based charity Antibiotic Research UK.

From French bulldogs to spaniels to daschunds, the 'Bark de Triomphe' saw 12 dogs of all breeds and sizes, owned and trained by licensed jockeys, racing to raise funds.

Peter Lancaster from Burgess Pet Care said: "As inaugural events go, the Burgess Supadog Bark de Triomphe was a huge success, and we’re delighted to have sponsored such a great day in aid of an even greater cause."

Kate Mckee, events manager at Beverley Racecourse, said: "Beverley Racecourse is already notorious for its world-famous donkey race and Camel Derby, so we’re no stranger to racing the unusual in aid of charity. This event was the first of its kind and made a big splash in the racing community. It had everyone talking! We thank Burgess Pet Care for their sponsorship and generous donation of pet food for the Supadogs."

Joy Richardson of Antibiotic Research UK added: "This invaluable support will help us to ensure a safer future for everyone by funding the research into combatting antibiotic resistant infections, developing new therapies and educating people to help prevent a global health catastrophe."

While they were attending the race, Burgess Pet Care also found out that it has been shortlisted for a prestigious PetQuip Awards 2017 for their locally-grown long-stem hay.

Mr Lancaster went on: "Our long stem feeding hay is grown locally in Yorkshire and we are really pleased with the recognition for the hard work of our team in bringing this fantastic product to market. We look forward to attending the award ceremony in Telford later this year."
