APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Tea, Chat and History - The first Tea, Chat & History session of the 2017/18 season will be held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on Monday. Admission is £1. The latest publication from the group, Lumiaries of Appleton-le-Moors will be on sale.

Back on song - Singalong restarts in the village hall on Wednesday, October 4, followed by sessions every first and third Wednesday of the month.

CROPTON

Car rally - The 10th classic car and motorcycle rally in the grounds of the village hall on Sunday, August 20, raised a total of £1,755. Forty-two classic cars and 83 motorcycles filled the show field. There were many and varied vehicles including a Rolls Royce, a Northern Diaries milk float 'nipper' used in Hull in the 1950s and several Harley Davidson motor cycles. During the day a husband and wife band, Fools Gold, entertained. Visitor numbers were a record. Refreshments sold out and raised £945. Teesside Yesteryear Motor Club have supported the event from its inception and £200 was donated to its charity, The Great Northern Air Ambulance.

GILLING EAST

Village hall - The heating repairs at the village hall are due to start next week. Fundraising towards further renovation works at the hall start with a bric-a-brac sale on Saturday from 10am to noon. On Tuesday, September 5, Dominic Goodwin and Friends will be performing Radio Fun. Tickets are £8 and available from gillingeastevents@hotmail.co.uk Chris Bannister will be performing the music of John Denver on Friday, September 15.

HOVINGHAM

Market - There will be more than 50 stalls at the village market on Saturday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Members of St Michael’s Church will be selling sweatshirts and stockings to raise funds for the church. Tickets will be on sale for the jazz night in aid of Hovingham Church on Saturday, September 30. Hovingham Action Group will be running the café and musician Josh Finn will be performing. The volunteer market manager is Murray Stewart.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn at 8.30pm on Sunday. It is to £2 enter and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown Inn.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Open show - Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society’s open show will be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 23. Schedules are available for the 117 classes. Children’s classes are free and there are five trophies to be won. Dinner club - The Wednesday dinner club at the Methodist church will be resuming on Wednesday, September 6. Older people and those living alone are welcome to join for a three-course meal at a reasonable price. For further information, phone Jean Lishman on 01751 432111.

Tractor run - The 12th JMK Memorial Tractor Run takes place on Sunday, September 10. Entry and sponsor forms are available from Malcolm Simpson on 01751 432645. The event is in aid of the Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie cancer care organisation. Anyone wishing to give a donation should phone 01751 431160.

Repair café - The Kirkbymoorside Environment Group is planning to set up a pop-up repair café once a month on market day. Volunteer repairers are needed who can offer to repair bikes or household items, do sewing, mending and alterations or have any other useful repairing talents. Ideas of all sorts welcomed. KIRKDALE

Patronal festival - St Gregory’s Minster will be celebrating its Patronal Festival with a Sung Eucharist at 11am on Sunday. The Friends of St Gregory’s Minster have invited its patron, Dr Francis Jackson, to the service and to lunch afterwards in celebration of his 100 years of music. The choir will sing his Communion Setting in G and Order Our Days in Thy Peace, an anthem he wrote specially for their Patronal Festival about 20 years ago and dedicated to Leslie Mathews and the choir of St Gregory’s Minster. Dr Philip Moore, who was Dr Jackson’s successor as Master of the Music of York Minster, will be playing the organ for the service which will open with Kirkdale Introit Non Enim Pro Locis Res which he wrote last year, especially for Kirkdale. Dr Moore is also a member of The Friends of St Gregory’s Minster. The choir will sing music by Sir Edward Bairstow who was Dr Jackson’s predecessor at York Minster. The preacher will be the Venerable Richard Martin, Archdeacon of Kalk Bay, in the Diocese of False Bay, South Africa which has a Companion Link with the Diocese of York.

MIDDLETON

Dementia Forward - The village hall hosts Dementia Forward every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm. It is an opportunity to meet new people, join in various activities, speak to a dementia advisor and enjoy refreshments. The cost is £3 per person. To join, phone 01904 692473.

NAWTON

Bingo - The monthly bingo in the village hall will be held on Saturday at 7.30pm. It is in aid of hall funds.

NORTON

Derwent Diggers - After a summer of garden visits and the annual summer social, which was a great success, Derwent Diggers Gardening Club are back to holding its monthly meetings and talks. With a view to families moving into the new houses being built in Malton and Norton and surrounding areas the next illustrated talk will be Gardening at the Front, given by John and Gail Summerfield. It will look at the challenges of new gardens at the front and back of the house. There will be plants for sale at the meeting which will be held at Trinity Methodist Chapel, Plum Street, Norton on Monday, September 4 from 7.30pm to 9pm. Admission is £2 for members and £3 for visitors and includes a raffle ticket and refreshments.

PICKERING

Memorial match - A memorial trophy match in memory of Andrew Kendall who passed away in June, aged 42, will be played at the Recreation Ground, Mill Lane, on Sunday, starting at 3pm. Andrew was a keen and loyal supporter of both Pickering football and cricket clubs. Each year the two clubs will compete for a trophy named after him. Sunday’s match is a game of T20 cricket. There will also be a barbecue and raffle. Admission is free and all monies raised will go to Welburn Hall School.

Fishkeepers - There will be a meeting of the Ryedale Aquarist Society at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall on Wednesday, September 6 at 7.30pm.

Super draw - Last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Weekly Super Draw was not won. The numbers were 3, 1 and 30. This week’s draw will be increased to £375. To enter the draw costs £1 per week per entry. To join see any Pikes committee member or call at Dunning Butchers shop, Bridge Street.

PEEMS - A meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society will be held at the WRVS Hungate Centre, on Wednesday September 6 at 7pm.

Tuesday Group - The first meeting of the new season of the Pickering Methodist Tuesday Group will take place at Potter Hill Methodist Church, on Tuesday, September 12 at 7.30pm. There will be a beetle drive and supper.

Cake stall - Stape Silver Band will be having a cake stall in the Market Place on Saturday from 9am. All proceeds are for band funds.

Tribute night - The unofficial Peter Kay tribute performer Lee Lard will be appearing live at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, September 16 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £15 which also includes a pie and peas supper. Tickets are available by phoning the Recreation Club on 01751 473317, Dunning Butchers in Bridge Street, and Television House in the Market Place. All profits from the show will be shared by Pickering Town Football Club and Pickering Cricket Club.

Ryedale Shopper - The Ryedale Shopper will be having a trip to Harrogate on Thursday, September 7 priced at £5. Quiz - The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Kirk Theatre - Tickets are on sale for an evening of music with Stape Silver Band on Saturday, September 16. Tickets are also available for the annual wartime show

Fleamarket – The town’s fleamarket and gift fair in the Liberal Club, Smiddy Hill, will be open from 10am to 4pm on Monday and Tuesday every week until further notice.

RIEVAULX

Musical evening - A musical evening with the Longton family from Bentham will be held at the Methodist Church on Saturday, September 9, at 7.30pm. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - A total of £345 was raised for Woodlands Community Centre funds at a prize bingo held in the centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker was Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo at the centre will be on Wednesday, September 27 and is in aid of Ryedale Dog Rescue.

Live band - Male/female duo Life’s a Riot will be playing music from the 60s, reggae and modern-day classics can at the Fleece Inn on Saturday.

SEAMER

St Martin’s – The Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at both services of Holy Communion. He talked about identity from Matthew 16 and Romans 12. At the 9.30am service, Enid Plevey read and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns. The sidespeople were Jim and Marion Baird and refreshments were served by Janet Lamb and Lucy Haycock. At the modern service at 11am, Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Sue Grice read. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with Chloe Proctor. Elizabeth Bradley assisted with the chalice, and also acted as sidesperson. Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Michael Earnshaw. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bert Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Harris. The offering was taken by Margaret Neave. At the beginning of his sermon Mr Earnshaw spoke about the Methodist love of hymns and he mentioned two of his favourite hymn writers and he said that hymns are sermons in their own right. He then went on to talk about faith. The preacher on Sunday at 10.30am is the Rev Bruce Russell.

SHERBURN

Letters draw - The Sherburn FC letters draw on Saturday saw B Langstaff win £120 with the letters H, L and R. The prize fund total next week will be £60.

Coffee morning - The Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning will be held on Friday, September 29 from 10am to noon. It will include a tombola, prize draw, cakes and stalls.

St Hilda’s Church - The Rev Judy Duke officiated at the Holy Communion service with Barbara Grice assisting with the chalice. Sidespersons were Keith and Jean Usher and Martin Monkman was the organist. The lesson was read by Barbara Grice and coffee was served by Jean Usher and helpers. At the close of the service Barbara Grice presented a cheque to Keith Usher, treasurer of St Hilda’s, for £200 being half of the donations given for her 80th birthday in lieu of presents. Another cheque for £200 is to be sent to the Marie Curie Cancer Care. The next service will be morning worship on Sunday, September 10 at 10.30am.

Methodist news - The Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Pam Ward. The welcome, Kim Canterbury, also assisted with the communion. Luke Heron read the Gospel lesson and also operated the audio visual equipment. Music was provided by Chris Cade and Robin McGowan. Rev Pam spoke about the question Jesus asked of his disciples, ‘Who do you say that I am?’ The children were learning that one name Jesus was called was King of Kings. After worship, refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The Holy Communion service next week at 10.30am will be led by the Rev Mary Jackman. On Monday, September 4 it is hoped that we will be able to go along to share in the prayers at the beach hut (Puffin 6) then maybe stay to share a picnic and singalong with Jean. There will be more information on Sunday.

Messy Church - There will be a session of Messy Church at the chapel on Saturday, September 9 when there will be the opportunity to build a castle or tower. Youngsters attending should meet for tea at 4.45pm.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - North/South winners of the competition held on Monday, August 21 were Lynda Lockwood and Mary Mortonson with 61.2 per cent with Barry Smith and Bob Wardell in second place with 53.7 per cent. East/West. Bob and Gladys Thompson won East/West with 64.2 per cent and in second place were Ralph and Hilary Hurst with 60.8 per cent.

Methodist Church - Alison Wragg from Martin House Children’s Hospice will be selling Christmas cards in the schoolroom on Tuesday, September 5 from 10am to 11.30am. Coffee will be available. The Ladies Group will meet in the schoolroom on Thursday, September 7 at 2pm. The speaker will be Ruth Holliday, who will give a talk called Learning for Disabled Adults. Micheal Bursell will give a talk called From Winkles to Walls in the schoolroom at 7pm on Saturday, September 9. It is part of the harvest social evening and will be followed by a faith supper.

WOMBLETON

Dog show - Wombleton Sports and Recreation Club are staging Scrufts Dog Show on Sunday on the village sports field. Entries will be taken from 11am with the first class at noon. It is £2 entry per class. The classes include most handsome male, prettiest female, most like owner, most obedient (sit, stay, down), best rescue dog, dog with the waggiest tail, obstacle race. Food and refreshments will be available. There will also be some sideshows. Any money raised are for pavilion improvements.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Wednesday, September 6 at 7.30pm to raise funds for the hall. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

WI REPORT

Helmsley - The branch met on Thursday, August 24 in the meeting room in the North York Moors National Park Authority’s offices. Vice-president Denise Kitchin welcomed 18 members and three visitors, after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read by Zena Lister. Secretary Helen Robinson gave out notices and information about future activities and outings. Programme secretary Chris Small introduced the guest speaker, beautician Hannah Swift, who has had her salon Beautylicious in Helmsley for 13 years. She talked to members about skincare and demonstrated facials and massage on volunteers Anne Jones and Helen Robinson. The competition of a perfume bottle was won by Chris Small, with Helen second and Zena third. Refreshments were served by Ann Nelson and Moira Wood. The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 28, when Angus Ashworth from Ryedale Auctioneers will give a talk about being an auctioneer and he will conduct an auction of items brought by members.
