POLICE have launched the first of a series of operations aimed at cracking down on drug use in Malton and Norton.

The operations have been welcomed by local councillors as a way of removing antisocial behaviour from the riverside areas of town.

Officers carried out the first of several planned operations at Riverside Walk on Sunday evening, to tackle what they describe as "an ongoing drugs issue" at the site.

Several people were stopped and searched for drugs and two were dealt with for possession of Class B drugs.

Inspector Martin Dennison said: "We are aware of the concerns regarding Riverside Walk and are determined to eradicate any illegal activity involving drugs in this area.

"Through the use of high-visibility patrols, proactive policing and working closely with our partners, we aim to send a very clear message to those involved with drug-taking and dealing, that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated and you will face the full consequences of the law.

"Community intelligence plays a vital role in our policing operations. We appreciate those who have come forward and contacted us with information."

Norton county councillor Keane Duncan said: "The Riverside walk has recently become a hotspot for drug taking and anti-social behaviour. Once a welcoming space, it is now one many people would rather avoid after dark.

"Blatant illegal activity here has gone on for far too long and many people have been in touch with me to raise their concerns.

"I commend North Yorkshire Police's efforts to crackdown on this behaviour and restore this open space to an area that can be safely enjoyed."

District councillor Paul Andrews added: "The drug menace is the scourge of modern society, and it is important that it does not take root in our towns, and be allowed to ruin the lives of our young people."
