AN open-air art exhibition which was cancelled after thieves and vandals trashed the site has been rescued.

The Scarborough Art Society's annual exhibition was due to be held in the Sunken Gardens in Scarborough, until their stands and storage shed were trashed or stolen.

However, the Society has been found a new indoor space to exhibit - at “Picturesque”, the framing shop and gallery on St John’s Road in Scarborough.

Barrie Petterson, the Society’s secretary, said that this "kind offer" by Picturesque might help offset the loss of annual income from the vandalsim.

“The Society is grateful for this opportunity to exhibit and sell paintings.

"The financing of our monthly art demonstrations at Queen Street Methodist Hall depends on our annual sales exhibition in the Sunken Gardens,” he explained.

The Picturesque premises are open every day except Sunday, from 9-30am – 5-30pm.

The Society's exhibit will run between September 5 and 30.

APPEAL

The Scarborough Art Society has also issued an appeal for help with storage space.

Their equipment which was not burned or stolen in the incident "remains insecure and needs a new home urgently".

Bill Blake, the Society's president, said that unused garage space might suffice as all the Society’s gear flat-packs.

He said: "From a security viewpoint, it would seem sensible to find such a space close to occupied premises – rather than in the middle of a field!"
