POLICE are stepping up patrols after a rise in vandalism and underage drinking.

In recent weeks, reports have been made of youths congregating in Castle Gardens and Orchards Fields, along with Water Lane car park in Malton and Wallgate Lane in Norton.

Broken bottles and litter has been left in the areas along with drug paraphernalia.

Further complaints have included reports of youth urinating and general anti-social behaviour.

Ryedale District and Norton Town Councillor Di Keal, who is also secretary to the Castle Garden management committee, said: “We really want the Castle Garden to be used by local people, but are appealing to visitors to keep the site a pleasant place for everyone to enjoy.

“We have had weekly problems recently with rubbish scattered about and broken glass from beer bottles on the main steps, which ruins the appearance of the garden and makes it dangerous for families with young children to visit.

“We have a weekly Forest School meeting in the garden for pre-school children and other community activities taking place.

"It is frustrating for our volunteers to be constantly clearing up rubbish before these events start.

"The garden is there for all, but irresponsible use by a small minority of people spoils it for everyone.”

Inspector Martin Martin Dennison, of Malton Police, said: “The great work by dedicated volunteers ensures the community of Malton and Norton have a unique recreational area in the Castle Garden and Orchard Fields.

"The Ryedale Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are aware, however, the garden is vulnerable to anti-social behaviour, underage drinkers and littering.

"Clearly this is not an acceptable use of the garden.

"The policing team will continue to conduct daily patrols of the Castle Garden and will deal with any offences and offenders robustly.

"We are working with the community team at Ryedale District Council towards longer term solutions to addressing anti-social behaviour in the area and making Ryedale Safer.”
