A FOURTH and final refugee family is being resettled in the Malton area as part of the Government’s commitment to help people from Syria and other war-torn countries.

They are part of 35 families who have been resettled so far as refugees across North Yorkshire.

The refugees who are arriving have been specifically selected and vetted by the Government, in conjunction with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), prior to setting off.

North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) and Ryedale District Council (RDC) have worked closely along with the police, Scarborough and Ryedale NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and the Refugee Council to prepare for their arrival.

The Refugee Council is helping the refugees with language support, access to services such as GPs and integration into the community.

Duncan Wells, head of resettlement at the Refugee Council, said: “It is a privilege to work in partnership with Migration Yorkshire and NYCC to support the resettlement of refugees here in Ryedale.

“There has been a fantastic joined up approach between RDC, local services, the Refugee Council, Churches Together, schools, libraries and other members of the local community in welcoming and supporting these families.

“The families are doing well and are happy to have been given the chance to rebuild their lives in peace in Yorkshire.”

County and district councillor Lindsay Burr said: “We hope the family’s will enjoy living in this area and delighted we were able to help.

“If any one just tries to imagine what these families have gone through, it must have been horrendous.

“My ward of Malton is warm and generous and will help where it can.”
