A SUCCESSFUL flower festival with a theme of children’s books was held in Allerston.

The parish church and the Methodist Chapel were filled with floral displays depicting a wide variety of books from classics such as The Secret Garden and Jungle Book to modern favourites Postman Pat and The Gruffalo.

Mary Kemp, from the Methodist Chapel, said: “Most of our many visitors found it impossible to pick a favourite from the many wonderful displays.”

Mary Bell, secretary at St John’s Church, said: “We want to thank all those people who gave their time and skill to create their displays and everyone who helped over the weekend. A final total is not yet known but the proceeds from the festival will contribute to the work of Martin House Children’s Hospice and and also help to maintain our two buildings.”
