RECORDS were shattered by Malton School’s track and field stars at the district championships in York.

Some of the records broken by the Malton athletes at the Scarborough and District Championships at York University had stood for 31 years.

Year 10 student Von Sumsard broke the triple jump record and the Year 9 girls broke the 4x100 metre relay, both of which had stood since 1986. Year 7 student Tierney Walsh broke the record for the 800 metres which had stood since 2002.

Several of the school’s top athletes also represented Scarborough District at the North Yorkshire County Athletics trials at York University. All the athletes performed very well with the stand-out performer being Year 9 student Isabel Matique who won the 200 metre race.

Isabel also qualified to represent North Yorkshire at the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships which took place at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham earlier this month. She had a great competition, setting a new personal best of 1.57 metres.

Tom Green, who is joint head of PE at Malton School, said: “It is really pleasing to see so many Malton school students perform so well in district and county athletics this summer.”

“The students have worked really hard over the last few years to improve in their respective events, and to see them beginning to reach their potential and break district records is just fantastic. I hope they will all continue to thrive next year in school sport and show the same commitment they have as this year.”

Thanks to funding from Malton School’s PTA, the students were all able to compete in their new athletics vests.
