ACKLAM

Car show - Acklam Church will host an unofficial car show on Saturday, August 19 from 2pm to 4pm as a tribute to Jim Robinson, a car enthusiast and churchwarden who died earlier this year. There will be refreshments available and a car accessories stall. Proceeds from the event will be shared by North Grimston and Acklam Churches.

ALLERSTON

Flower festival - Churches Together in Allerston are holding a flower festival on Friday to Sunday. About 30 displays will be based on children’s books and there are plans to interpret both modern and classic stories in the parish church of St John the Evangelist and in the Methodist Chapel. The festival will be opened by the Venerable Richard Seed, founder of Martin House Children’s Hospice, at a reception on Friday starting at 6.30pm in St John's Church. This will include a musical interlude and a light buffet with prosecco. Tickets for the reception are £5 and are available from Mary Bell, phone 01723 859918, or Mary Kemp, phone 01723 859841. Displays in both church and chapel will be open for viewing on Saturday between 10am and 5pm and on Sunday between 10am and 4pm. At regular intervals on each day there will be readings from the chosen books and musical items. Refreshments will be available each day at both venues. The festival will close with a service in the Methodist Chapel on Sunday at 4.30pm led by the Rev Ruth Duck. Entry to the festival is free but donations will be gratefully received. Proceeds from the festival will be shared between the building maintenance funds of both church and chapel and Martin House Hospice which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church guide - The new guide to All Saints Church will be launched at the fete on Sunday, August 6. It also includes a history of the church and is packed with colour illustrations. It has been written by Vivian Bairstow as a follow up to the Brompton Village Trail and Brompton Village Hall books. The foreword to the guide has by written Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York. All the profits from the guide will go to the church. There will be a combined benefice service at Langdale End on Sunday and no service at All Saints. It will be conducted by the Venerable David Garnett.

Duck race - Tickets for the fete duck race on Brompton Beck within the Manor House grounds are on sale from Glaves Butchers. They cost £1 and the first prize is £25.

Lunch - The Village Ventures community lunch was held in the village hall last Wednesday. There will be no lunch in August. The next one will be on Wednesday, September 20 at 12.30pm.

BULMER

Bridge club - Sheila Johnson and Gill Oxendale won the meeting on Thursday, July 20. Second were Judith Porter and Thelma Hardware.

CROPTON

Coffee morning - The next monthly coffee morning will be held in the village hall on Tuesday, August 1, from 10.30am to noon.

Car rally - The annual classic car and motor cycle rally will be held in the village hall and grounds on Sunday, August 20. The number of cars and motorcycles increases each year. HELMSLEY

Charity boost - A recent envelope collection in and around Helmsley raised more than £4,550 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

RNLI fund raisers - Cream teas, priced at £3, will be available between 2pm and 4pm at 19 The Limes on Wednesday, August 2. Proceeds will go towards the RNLI. It will be held in the garden, weather permitting. There will also be a raffle. There will be an RNLI coffee morning at Helmsley Arts Centre on Friday, August 4.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Pub quiz - There will be a quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church at the Crown Inn on Sunday, August 6 at 8.30pm. Entry is £2 and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown Inn.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Camera Club - Members of Kirkbymoorside Camera Club will meet on Thursday, August 3 at the Moorside Club & Bar for the creative competition.

Live act – Lainey West will be performing at the Moorside Club & Bar on Saturday at 8.30pm.

History tour - A history tour of All Saints Church with Phil Thomas will take place on Wednesday, August 2 at 7pm. It includes a tour round the outside of the church to look at historical clues and conservation issues before returning back into the church to hear Phil unravel the history and development of the church and its features. Wine, or juice, and nibbles will be followed by an informal chat. The talk lasts about an hour and half. Tickets cost £5.

Repair café - The Kirkbymoorside Environment Group is planning to set up a pop-up repair café once a month on market day. Volunteer repairers are needed who can offer to repair bikes or household items, do sewing, mending and alterations or have any other useful repairing talents. Ideas of all sorts will be welcomed. Quiz sheet - The quiz sheet in aid of Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society proved popular. quiz sheet. Using the initial letters of each answer would give entrants Kirkbymoorside and District Horticultural Society Show. The first prize was won by J Wilkins of Hovingham. Summer fair - All Saints Church summer fair will be held on Saturday in the Memorial Hall. There will be stalls selling jams, pickles, cakes, books, jigsaws, a bottle stall raffle and tombola. KIRKDALE

Quiz - This year’s summer quiz in aid of St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale and St Hilda’s, Beadlam is on sale. It is £1 per copy from either church, or from any of the many shops and other outlets in and around Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. This year’s theme is All Creatures Great and Small. The quiz will run until mid-September, after which the winners will be drawn from all the entries received with prizes of £15, £10 and £5 for the first three all correct entries.

MALTON

Flower club - The July meeting of Malton and District Flower Club featured a demonstration by Kevin Hara called Mid-Summer Delights. It was a fun afternoon attended by a number of new faces taking advantage of the annual bring a friend for free offer. Kevin, a former florist and current co-ordinator of flowers for Beverley Minster, displayed his vast experience of flower arranging by creating designs using garden and bought flowers alongside fruit and vegetable materials. Educational tips were given while presenting a colourful display, reflecting the garden in summer. The club’s annual general meeting is on Tuesday, September 19 at 1pm, followed by a demonstration by Jo Smith entitled Bon Voyage. Members and visitors are welcome. RIEVAULX

Open-air service - An open-air service is being held on Sunday, August 6 adjacent to Rievaulx Abbey ruins, near the River Rye. Vehicular access to the field is through the main abbey car park and directions to the field will be given from the main road. The service begins at 3pm and the preacher will be Keith Hall from Richmond. There will be musical items by Bernadette Pickering from Bedfordshire. People can bring a seat so they can sit out for the service. After the service, there will be tea for everyone in the village hall. The evening worship in Rievaulx Chapel at 6.30pm and will be led by Keith Hall with musical items by Bernadette Pickering.

RILLINGTON

Bingo boost - A total of £360 was raised at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre for Malton Hospital League of Friends, plus a further £40 donated by the weekly progressive whist drives. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker was Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo in the centre will be on Wednesday, August 23 and is in aid of centre funds.

Ladies guild - Eleven members were present at the July meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild held in Woodlands Community Centre. Member Caroline Neuff, standing in for the scheduled speaker, gave a Power Point presentation called Cuckoo Clocks, Lakes and Snow White Peaks - a photographic tour of Switzerland. The vote of thanks was given by Jacquelyn Wood. The treasurer, Judy Duke sold tickets for the raffle, and presented her accounts for 2016. It was decided to make a donation of £50 from funds to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Quiz time - Mike Williams will be hosting a general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Admission £2 includes a hot supper and cash prizes. After ten years of being quizmaster at fortnightly pub quizzes in the area Mike is retiring. This will not affect his charity quizzes which he will continue to do. Team @ the Bar were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz and the jackpot was another rollover.

Life saver - A defibrillator has been installed on the outside wall of the village hall and is available for use. Training courses are available for those wishing to volunteer their services when required. SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by the Rev Bruce Russell. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward Bert Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the collection. Bible readings were given by Bob Jackman, who read from Exodus, and Amanda Clayton, who read from Matthew’s gospel. The theme of Rev Russell’s sermon was being lost and he said that we live in a world that seems to have got lost. The preacher next week at 10.30am is the Rev Rosie Coles. The concert on Saturday night was successful and the organisers want to thank everyone who performed, attended or helped with the supper.

St Martin's Church - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and Stephen Raettig preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Stephen used the gospel reading to illustrate the background to Jesus’ parable of the field of wheat and tares. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano and Richard Firth assisted with the distribution of communion. Elizabeth Chapman and Clare Firth were sidespersons, and Clare, together with Enid Plevey also served refreshments. Rev Moreland also led the modern communion service at 11.00am, and Steve Raettig preached again. Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and assisted with the chalice, Elizabeth Bradley read and was also the sidesperson. John Grice led the sung worship with Sue Grice (guitar and bass), Steve Raettig (keyboard) and John Taylor (drums). Jenny and Duncan Bland served refreshments after the service.

Art exhibition - The Brushstrokes Art Group hold its annual exhibition in St Martin’s Church from Thursday, August 10 to Wednesday, August 16 from 10am to 4pm daily except Sunday, August 13, when it will be open from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday. Entry is free and many exhibits are available for purchase.

SHERBURN

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters F J K. There was no winner so the prize fund next week will be £240.

Live music - The Wave will be performing at the Sports and Community Club on Saturday, July 29, starting at 9pm. Entry is free and there will be a late bar. The monthly quiz will be on Sunday, July 30 at 8pm. It is £1 per person to play.

St Hilda’s Church - Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at the Holy Communion service held at St Hilda’s Church on Sunday. Sidespersons were Betty Flinton, who also read the lesson, and Barbara Grice assisted by Sue Mennell. Martin Monkman is still unwell and unable to play the organ, so music was provided by tape. Coffee was served at the close of the service by Barbara Grice and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be morning worship on Sunday, August 6 at 10.30am and will be led by Barbara Grice.The concert by Allerston Aloud will be on Friday, September 8 and not as stated in last week.

Luncheon club - It was all change this month for the Senior Citizen’s Luncheon Club. Instead of meeting at the Chapel Hall for lunch, members had afternoon tea in Sandra and Chris Cade’s garden. Birthday greetings were sung to Gill and Kay. The helpers were Liz, Janet, Sandra, Jean, Kay, Judith and Christine. The next luncheon club will be back at the Chapel Hall on Wednesday, August 16, meeting from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. The speaker will be Barbara Grice who talk about her experiences of television when she recently appeared on the programme 15 to 1. Methodist news - Morning worship was led by Deacon Helen Webster. The welcomer was Kim Canterbury, who also read one of the lessons. The other Bible reading was by steward, Liz Aconley. The offertory steward was Ray Pickard and the organist was Chris Cade. The service was based on the calling of the disciples from the book of John. Children learned the story of the Good Samaritan and make First Aid boxes to remind them of caring for others. After worship refreshments were served in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Deacon Andrew Carter.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - There were joint winners of the competition held on Monday, July 17. Margaret Lowe with Isa Eggleston and Barry Smith with Bob Wardell each scored 62.5 per cent.

WESTOW

Drop-in session - The monthly drop-in session will be held on Thursday, August 3 at the cricket pavilion from 2pm to 4pm. There will be music, cards, dominoes and good company. If anyone has a favourite CD, or old photographs of the area, they are welcome to take them along. Tea, coffee and some home-baked cakes will be available by donation. Domino drive - The next domino drive in the hall to raise funds for the village hall is on Saturday at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits. There will also be a domino drive on Wednesday, August 2.

WI REPORT

Ebberston & Allerston - Jan Abery presided at the July meeting which was attended by 20 members and four guests including friends from Scalby & Newby WI who outlined the craft 'dabble afternoon' which they will be running soon. It was announced that £30 was raised for St Catherine’s Hospice from the sale of sunflower seeds and the race is now on to see who can grow the tallest flower. Howard Gibbon, an expert in the art of T’ai Chi talked about the history of the Lee style of movements. He helped members have a go before giving a demonstration of a sequence of flowing movements. There is no meeting next month. The guest speaker in September will be Jill Smith, of Binnington Blooms.
