ALLERSTON

Flower festival - Churches Together in Allerston are organising a flower festival on the Friday, July 28 to Sunday, July 30. About 30 displays will be based on children’s books and there are plans to interpret both modern and classic stories in the parish church of St John the Evangelist and in the Methodist Chapel. The festival will be opened by the Venerable Richard Seed, founder of Martin House Children’s Hospice, at a reception on the evening of July 28 starting at 6.30pm in St John's Church. This will include a musical interlude and a light buffet with prosecco. Tickets for the reception are £5 and are available from Mary Bell, phone 01723 859918, or Mary Kemp, phone 01723 859841. Displays in both church and chapel will be open for viewing on the Saturday between 10am and 5pm and on the Sunday between 10am and 4pm. At regular intervals on each day there will be readings from the chosen books and musical items. Refreshments will be available each day at both venues. The festival will close with a service in the Methodist Chapel on Sunday at 4.30pm led by the Rev Ruth Duck. Entry to the festival is free but donations will be gratefully received. Proceeds from the festival will be shared between the building maintenance funds of both church and chapel and Martin House Hospice which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Parish Council - The common land exchange proposal to allow the future development of part of Spaunton Quarry will be sent to the Secretary of State in October, and the planning application for the development will be submitted next year. The parish council has the opportunity of having a representative on the committee of the John Stockton Education Trust. A volunteer from the community is being sought to clean and oil benches in the village.

History walk - There will be a history walk of about one mile starting at the village hall at 10.45am on Sunday, August 6 and finishing about noon. The walk is part of the Breath of Fresh Air Events organised by The North York Moors National Park Authority.

Barbecue - The village barbecue will be held at the village hall at 4.30pm on Saturday, July 29.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service on Sunday will be Holy Communion using the Book of Common Prayer at 8am and will be conducted by the vicar.

Tug-of-war - Men’s, women’s and children’s teams from Brompton and Sawdon will be competing in a tug-of-war competition on the Butts and the end of the church fete on Sunday, August 6. The winning village will claim the Dragon Trophy.

Sports day - Brompton and Sawdon Community Primary School’s sports day was held on the cricket field last Friday. There was a wide range of events for the four school teams to compete in and t he entries in the mums and dad races were the largest ever. The staff race was won by Mr Cooper. The day culminated with tug-of-war competitions for children and adults.

Perennials talk – Members of Brompton & District Gardening Club will meet at 7.30pm in the village hall on Wednesday, July 26 when Alistair Taylor will give a talk called Making the Most of Perennials. New members will be welcome.

Quiz - The 1st Forge Valley Guides are currently raising money with the Thornton-le-Dale Guide Company for a joint trip to Holland in October with a flora and fauna quiz. The quiz sheets, which cost £1, are on sale at various local shops including Glaves Butchers, Brompton Forge tearooms, Ayton fish and chip shop and Wardell’s in Thornton-le-Dale. Alternatively, they can be bought from Elaine Mudd by sending your request and money plus a stamped addressed envelope to 2 Sawdon Lane, Brompton-by-Sawdon, Scarborough, YTO13 9DT. The first prize will be £10 and second prize £5. All entries must be in by Friday, September 22 and posted to Elaine Mudd at the above address together with a stamped addressed envelope for return of entry and results.

BULMER

Bridge club - Winners of the meeting on Thursday, July 13 were Jill Overdale and Sheila Johnson with 67.2 per cent. Second were Sheila Briske and Jane Bartlett with 57.8 per cent.

CROPTON

Afternoon tea - St Gregory’s Church, Cropton, invites you to join them for Homemade afternoon tea will be available in the village hall on Saturday, July 29, from 2pm to 4pm. It is organised by St Gregory’s Church and there will be a number of stalls including bric-a-brac, plants, cakes, tombola and a raffle. The entrance charge of £3 includes scone, jam, cream and tea or coffee.

HELMSLEY

Arts and crafts - There will be an arts and crafts fair at the Arts Centre on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. It will feature stalls from artists and crafters from Ryedale and beyond. Log on to www.helmsleyarts.co.uk to book a table.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Ladies Fellowship - Eleanor Harrison opened the July meeting with a prayer. Edith Youren had knitted enough squares for another blanket to be made up and donated to Children in Distress. At the last minute, the beauty expert was unable to attend so a beetle drive was held. Ann Gray emerged a clear winner and received a bouquet of flowers. It was an evening for flowers as Cath Nicholson was with the group again and received some sweet peas and there were birthday flowers for Dorothy Masterman. Dorothy is the group’s oldest member and Kathy Robson had made a chocolate cake for the celebration. The other birthday girls were Kath Evans and Ann Gray for June and Dot Collier, Joan Magson and June Sinfield for July. Cathie Hather and Cath Nicholson provided the tea and biscuits. There will not be a meeting in August with the next get-together on Wednesday, September 13 at 7.30pm in the library for a stained-glass demonstration. New members are always welcome.

Camera club - The creative competition will be held on Thursday, August 3 at the Moorside Club & Bar.

Garden party - The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will host a garden party at West Lund Lane on Saturday from 1pm to 3pm. Entry is free. It will include cream teas, a raffle, tombola and various stalls.

Heritage Day - The History Group is holding a heritage day on Saturday. Events will include the launch of two new books. There will be a film show throughout the day with the last showing at 7.30pm. Many old photographs without names will be on display and it is hoped visitors will be able to identify some. There will be two guided walks around the town, plus displays of spinning, quilting and knitting.

Moorside Club & Bar - The live entertainment at the Moorside Club & Bar on Saturday will be provided by Dave Lee Harper. The act on Saturday, July 29 will be Lainey West. Both start at 8.30pm. Sunday’s garden party at the club has been postponed.

Repair café - The Kirkbymoorside Environment Group is planning to set up a pop-up repair café once a month on market day. Volunteer repairers are needed who can offer to repair bikes or household items, do sewing, mending and alterations or have any other useful repairing talents. Ideas of all sorts will be welcomed. Summer fair - All Saints Church summer fair will be on Saturday, July 29 in the Memorial Hall. There will be stalls selling jams, pickles, cakes, books, jigsaws, a bottle stall raffle and tombola. Donations of tombola prizes would be much appreciated. There will be a collection box in church or phone 01439 770031 to arrange collection from your home.

KIRKDALE

Quiz - This year’s summer quiz in aid of St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale and St Hilda’s, Beadlam is on sale. It is £1 per copy from either church, or from any of the many shops and other outlets in and around Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. This year’s theme is All Creatures Great and Small. The quiz will run until mid-September, after which the winners will be drawn from all the entries received with prizes of £15, £10 and £5 for the first three all correct entries.

LEVISHAM

Sixties Fest - There will be Elvis tribute act and Elvis exhibition, plus displays of 1960s vehicles, at Levisham Station on Saturday and Sunday as part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Sixties Fest. The event runs from noon to 4pm.

LOCKTON

Country show - The annual Saltersgate Farmers Hunt Country Show with Sports will be held at Saltersgate Bank Top on Saturday, July 29.

MIDDLETON

Dementia Foward - Welcome Wednesday, organised by Dementia Forward, is held from 1pm to 3pm every Wednesday in the village hall. It is an opportunity to meet new friends, join in various activities and speak to a dementia advisor. The cost is £3 per person with refreshments provided.

PICKERING

Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, July 11 for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Charles Weston. Gordon Clitheroe spoke about the foundation and first 50 years of Beck Isle Museum. Club membership inquiries are welcome by telephone to 01751 472879.

Train visit - East Midlands Trains ran a 125 high-speed train from Derby last Saturday which called at Chesterfield, Sheffield, York, and Middlesbrough before joining the North Yorkshire Moots Rail line at Grosmont to journey to Pickering. Money raised from the train visit was for railway children’s charities. It is the thought to be first time one of these trains has been in Pickering.

Super Draw -In last week’s Super Draw organised by Pickering Town Football Club nobody won the main prize of £825. The numbers were 7, 28 and 5. This week’s draw will be increased to £900.

Rounders tournament - Ryedale Sports Club’s annual fun day will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 10am until late afternoon. One of the main events is the rounders tournament for which entries are now being accepted. A team consists of nine players. If it is a mixed team there should be no more than five male players. Jazz festival - Tickets for the annual Ryedale Jazz Festival which will run from Sunday, July 23 to Saturday, July 29 cost £12 for Monday to Saturday concerts £12 or £60 for the whole six-day package. Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will hold a domino drive at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, at 7.30pm on Thursday, July 27.

Sixties Fest - Pickering will be rocking to the Sixties Fest on Saturday and Sunday with events held along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Grosmont. There will be live music in the main car park at Pickering Station from noon on Saturday and 11am on the Sunday, there will be exhibitions in the learning centre on platform two.

RILLINGTON

Air ambulance support - A coffee morning and raffle held at the Buckrose Community Café raised £285.30 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Quiz time - Seven teams playing for £52 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. Gary’s Team came first after a tie-break. Second were Honeymooners and another tie-break for third place was won by Team @ the Bar with Weaverthorpe 4 just missing out on a prize. The £12 jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar. Mike’s next and last quiz at the Fleece will be on Friday, July 28. Sue’s Crew were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz. The jackpot was a roll over.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday as taken by the Rev Nigel Spencer. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bob Jackman and the welcome was Margaret Harris. Bible readings were given by Margaret Harris, who read from Romans and Margaret Neave, who read from Matthew’s gospel. Margaret Neave also took the collection. In his sermon, Rev Spencer spoke of the way Jesus used many parables in his teachings and he referred to the parable of the sower which likened the sowing of seeds to the way some people live their Christian lives. During the service, Holy Communion was observed. The preacher next week at 10.30am is the Rev Bruce Russell. The next concert is on Saturday at 7.30pm and features the Singing for Fun group and guests. This will be an evening of songs, recitations and fun followed by supper. There will be no entrance fee but donations will be appreciated.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth, assisted by reader Judith Dean, presided at the service of Holy Communion at 9.30am. Judith also preached the sermon which was based on the gospel reading of the parable of the sower. Sue Johnson and Enid Plevey were the sidespersons, Julie Stephenson served refreshments, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Kieron Middleton gave a bible reading and also led the prayers prepared by Kate Middleton who also assisted with the distribution of communion. Kate, together with Kim, led the children’s activities in the church rooms and later joined the main church service. Judith Dean preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which she also led. Tim Cremer led the intercessions and Sue Grice read. Sue also played guitar in the sung worship, led by Richard Fuller with John Grice (guitars) and John Taylor (drums). Liz Cremer and Elizabeth Bradley ran the Sunday Club, and Elizabeth also served refreshments after the service. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson.

Lavender talk - Gill Tompkinson from Broomfleet will talk about growing lavender, pinks and carnations at a meeting of the Yorkshire Pelargonium & Geranium Society in Seamer and Irton Memorial Hall on Sunday, July 23 at 2pm. Further details are available from the secretary Ron Ward on 01723 355656. Ron is to stand down after 16 years in office and anyone wishing to take on the role should phone him.

SHERBURN

Letters draw - The letters drawn on Saturday in the weekly Sherburn FC draw were P, W and X. There was no winner so this week’s prize fund will rise to £180.

Live music - The Wave will be performing at the Sports and Community Club on Saturday, July 29, starting at 9pm. Entry is free and there will be a late bar. The monthly quiz will be on Sunday, July 30 at 8pm. It is £1 per person to play.

St Hilda’s - The church will be hosting local choir Allerston Aloud for an evening of music and entertainment on Friday, September 9 at 7pm. Admission will be £5 and includes refreshments. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion with the Rev Joe Kinsella officiating, on Sunday at 9am.

Garden party - A garden party at the home of Mr and Mrs Magee raised £120 each for Sherburn Methodist Church, Ganton Parish Church and Action for Children. The afternoon included garden tours, a quiz, various games, cream scones and cups of tea.

Methodist news - The service on Sunday was led by Rev Bob Whitfield, assisted by his wife, Brenda, who read one of the Bible readings telling the story of the healing of blind Bartimaeus. Sandra and Jan were the stewards and Janet read from Ephesians Chapter 4. Chris played the organ and Robin played the bass guitar. After the worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Deacon Helen Webster.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - The meeting held on Tuesday, July 11 was attended by 21 members who heard a talk on coastlines by Terry Frazier from the National Trust. There is no Ladies Group meeting in August.

SNAINTON

Yorkshire celebrations - There will be a Yorkshire Day celebration in the village hall on Saturday, July 29 from noon to 4pm. There will Yorkshire pudding lunches, afternoon tea, welly wanging, a tombola and an opportunity to sample Wold Top beers and browse the craft and produce stalls. All funds raised will go to the upkeep of the village hall and playing fields. Entry is free.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - Bob and Gladys Thompson won the meeting on Monday, July 10 with 54.2 per cent. Three pairs were joint second with 51.4 per cent - George and Pat Donnor, Janet Sutor with Sue Shuttleworth and Margaret Lowe with Isa Eggleston.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - The next domino drive in the village hall to raise funds for the hall is on Saturday, July 29 at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and include tea and biscuits.

YCA REPORT

Rillington and District - Twelve members and four guests were present at the July meeting of Rillington and District Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association at Grange Farm, East Heslerton by invitation of John Cussons. Members were taken into his museum of farming and country life which is an Aladdin's cave of exhibits housed in converted farm buildings. The first rooms held any number of farming, countryside and domestic exhibits. There was also a replica farmhouse kitchen with bedroom above. A visit to John’s extensive and well-maintained garden followed before savoury and sweet refreshments, prepared by Jenny Ireland, were served in the farmhouse’s formal dining room. Barbara Howard thanked John and Jenny for their hospitality and donations were made to Marie Curie Cancer Care. A card has been sent to chairman Eileen Myers wishing her a speedy recovery. The next meeting will be held in the village hall when Jean Dale will give a talk on the Great Wall of China.
