LANDSCAPES by Scarborough artist Peter Watson which take a different look at the Yorkshire Wolds, coast, forests and urban scenes go on show at Sledmere next week.

Peter’s new exhibition, entitled Furrowed Brows, is at the Triton Gallery from Tuesday 1, to Sunday. August 13.

The exhibition will comprise recent paintings and prints on canvas and paper of the Yorkshire Wolds, coast and forestry looking to highlight the diverse patterns, colours and shapes to be found in this area throughout the seasons, and also reflecting the impact of man-made objects and the effect of modern farm machinery on the landscape.

It will also feature Peter’s depictions of some local urban scenes including Quiet Pool 2, a portrait of the old indoor pool in Scarborough, which closed recently.

Peter said: “I enjoy the very sharp graphic images which can be created as a result of man’s industrial impact on the natural landscape – one of the paintings in the exhibition, for instance, Pole Dancing, shows a field of rape with a telegraph pole in the middle where the farmer has had to make some angular diversions around it.”

Peter is also well known for his sporting images, and will shortly be starting work on a new painting – he was commissioned by Scarborough Athletic FC to paint its match against Sheffield United at the official opening of the new ground at Scarborough Sports Village on July 15.

The original painting will go on show at the club, with 250 signed, limited prints on sale through the club.

The Triton Gallery, Sledmere, opened in 2008 and is now one of East Yorkshire's most prominent exhibition spaces for contemporary art. The gallery is housed in the magnificent building opposite the entrance to Sledmere House, built in the 1840s as a ‘model farm'. It is open every day except Monday between 10.30am and 3.30 pm.
