FIRE crews attended a grass fire yesterday caused by "controlled burning", and another which had spread from a barbecue.

At around 12.45pm on Sunday, July 9, a fire crew from Helmsley were mobilised to a report of a grass fire at Headlands Road, Kirkbymoorside.

A fire spokesperson said that there was "a large amount" of dry grass involved in the fire, which spread from so-called controlled burning.

Fire crews were busy with several other callouts on the day.

Earlier, at 11.30am, crews from Thirsk, Helmsley and Huntington were sent to reports of a fire in a building on High Street, Husthwaite.

This was believed to have been an overheating motor due to an electrical fault.

And at 1.50pm, a crew, again from Helmsley, were despatched to a report of a fire in a hedge on Main Street in Sproxton.

A spokesperson said that this was approximately two metres of hedge, with the flames spread from a barbecue.

The fire crew extinguished the blaze using a hose reel.
