MOUNTAIN rescue teams came to the aid of some holidaymakers last night with the aid of a smartphone App.

Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team (SRMRT) were alerted to the situation just before 9.30pm.

A Belgian couple in a Volkswagen camper van had become stranded off made up tracks in Dalby Forest.

The team established the couple's position using SARLOC, a smartphone system which lets rescue teams know a phone's location.

Developed in 2011 for a rescue team in Wales, the system texts a weblink to stranded people who have dialled emergency services. They click the link to send their latitude and longitude in an OS grid reference to mountain rescue.

Two SRMRT team vehicles were deployed to the location and recovered the camper van back to a track.
