MORE than 30 riders used their pedal power to complete a coast-to-coast cycling challenge, organised by a Wigginton couple in memory of their baby boy.

The riders cycled 207-miles, from Morecambe to Bridlington, over three days, which they finished on Saturday.

The challenge was organised by husband and wife Bronagh and Matthew Thompson, of Arenhall Close, Wigginton, with the help of Matthew’s brother Robert.

In September 2016, Bronagh was pregnant with her third child, but sadly Jude was delivered as a full-term stillborn in York Hospital.

Bronagh, 35, said she and Matthew, 37, received vital support from three charities - York SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society), 4Louis and Our Angels - following the devastating experience.

The couple decided to organise the coast-to-coast ride to thank the charities and give them a cash boost, with more than £8,000 raised so far.

Matthew and Robert were among 37 riders who took part.

Bronagh said: “Some of the bikers were quite overwhelmed as they crossed the finish line. Our bike ride itself was a great success.

“High moral and teamwork played a huge part during the three days and any mechanical difficulties were over come quickly.”

She says she is grateful to friends and family for taking time out of their busy lives to join Matthew and Robert on the ride.

“What started as a casual chat in the hospital room in York Hospital after Jude died, little did we anticipate, would be the start of a big undertaking,” Bronagh said.

“One of our wishes is to give back to York SANDS, 4Louis and Our Angels and hopefully after our coast to coast bike ride we can help to give these charities a cash boost as well as raise awareness.”

She added: “A parents worst fear is that their child will be forgotten so for Matthew and I it has been quite incredible to know that friends and family are helping us to keep Jude’s memory alive.”

York SANDS, based at York Hospital, have provided ongoing support to the couple.

While they were coming to terms with the loss of Jude, 4Louis provided them with a memory box, filled with thoughtful items such as candles, teddies and a clay impression kit, to capture an impression of a baby’s hands and feet.

Meanwhile, Our Angels, in Harrogate, runs a support group which the couple attend.

A crowdfunding page has been set up for anyone who would like to support the family’s fundraising efforts and make a donation.
