APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History walk - Fifteen visitors too part in the seven-mile guided history walk called the mills of the Tabular Hills. It was led by Jim Hall and supporter by Dr David Worth. Five mills were visited, three of which had the owners present. Shirley Brooke and Margaret Priest provided refreshments on the return to the village hall.

HELMSLEY

Your news - The town’s Oxfam shop, with assistance Brookes News assisting is collecting in weekly local news for the Vale and Dale column. This task was formerly carried out by Doreen Wardle for many years. Short articles may be sent by email or by note by 11am on Friday, market day. Transport meeting - Bus users, local councillors and businesses are invited to a meeting of the Northern Ryedale Passenger Transport Group on Tuesday, July 11 at 11am at the North York Moors National Park Authority’s headquarters. The meeting is an opportunity for people to learn about bus and rail travel developments. Transport operators, town and parish councillors and local authority officials are also invited. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Menzown - Sixteen members visited Elvington Airfield - the base of the Yorkshire Air Museum and home of the Allied Air Forces Memorial on Monday, June 12. The party was given an introductory talk in the little chapel by one of the volunteer guides. The emphasis was on Bomber Command and the pursuance of victory in World War Two but there were also references to the development and use of airships and the flimsy open-cockpit planes of 1914/18. Dotted among the buildings were war-time vehicles - staff cars, tractors, fire-engines, lorries - and in the dispersal area is a Nimrod surveillance aircraft and a Handley-Page Victor. There were a large variety of aircraft in the main display including a Blackburn 1911 Mercury monoplane, Hawker Hurricane, De Havilland Mosquito, Hawker Harrier and Hunter. The museum opened to the public in 1986 and has gone from strength to strength. The visit ended with a fish and chips supper and Roy Bishop was thanked for arranging the trip. The next meeting is on Monday, July 10 back at the Kings Head, when Michael Bedington of the National Trust will speak about Fountains Abbey.

Bridge club - At the latest game North/South winners were George Goodall and Chris Baxter with 67 per cent. Judith O'Donnell and David Whitehead were runners-up on 58 per cent. Christine Brett and Clarissa Napier made 60 per cent for top at East/West. Ann Scott and Frank Bailey were second with 58 per cent. Play of the week went to Tony Ward and Paul Whitehead.

Tuesday Group – The speaker at the next meeting in the Methodist Church Jubilee Room at 7.30pm on Tuesday, June 27 will be Rachel Shackleton. Anne will be the leader is Anne and the tea hostesses are Audrey and Rosie.

Amnesty International – The local group meetings are now held on the second Thursday of the month. The next one is at the Friends’ Meeting House on Thursday, July 13 at 1.30pm. From the beginning of next month campaigning will begin for Human Rights Defenders around the world and will continue for about 18 months. For any more information, phone Barbara on 01439 770985.

Heritage Day – The History Group are holding a heritage day on Saturday, July 22.

NAWTON

Prize bingo - Friends of Grace Smith, known as Binky, who attends Nawton Primary School and is currently having treatment for T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma will host a prize bingo on Friday at 7.30pm in the village hall. Entry is £5 for adults and £2.50 for under-14s. There will be a raffle and refreshments. Proceeds will go to Grace’s chosen charities.

Family fun day - Time is drawing near for the grand potato weigh-in which will be held at 2pm on the summer family fun day on Sunday, July 16. There are prizes for the heaviest crop and single potato both for adults and children. The day’s activities will include a raffle, races, rounders and a barbecue.

Anniversary - The choir, led by Noel Smith, will sing at the Methodist Chapel’s anniversary on Sunday at 6.15pm. There will be a supper in village hall at close.

PICKERING

Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, June 13 for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel under the chairmanship of Charles Weston. John Cheetham gave a talk, aided by live animals, on six decades working with giant reptiles. This included appearances in three James Bond films with the late actor Roger Moore.

Freemasonry - Find out what Freemasonry is all about on Saturday from 11am to 4pm at the Victory Lodge, Bridge Street. It is part of the national Freemasonry Open Day. Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest organisations, non-religious and non-political, fraternal and charitable, with members from all walks of life. It is an opportunity see inside the lodge rooms, have a chat with active Freemasons and enjoy provided refreshments. Weekly draw - There was no winner of last week’s main prize of £525 in the Pickering Town FC Weekly Draw with the numbers 14, 37 and 4. This week’s draw will be increased to £600.

RILLINGTON

Charity dominoes - A total of £270 was raised for Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group at a domino drive held in Woodlands Community Centre. The MC was Derick Waters. Margaret King, who organised the event, wishes to thank everyone who supported the event.

Ladies Guild - Nine members and friends went on the annual outing of Rillington and District Ladies Guild to Sledmere House. After coffee, the group were given a one-and-a-half hour guided tour of the house. Gwyneth, the morning's guide outlined the history of the house and its contents. She was thanked by Sue Donnell. After a light lunch in the café, members joined gardener Jan for a guided tour of the gardens. The day was rounded off with a meal at the Fleece Inn.

Quiz time - Eight teams playing for £62 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 62 points were Team@ the Bar, second were Weaverthorpe 4 (60) and third Honeymooners (57). Sue’s Crew were awarded a consolation prize. The £15 jackpot was won by The Gypseys. Mike’s next quiz at the Fleece will be on Friday, June 30. The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz were Honeymooners and the jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar.

Cleaning up - A Love Where You Live action evening will be held in the village on Wednesday, June 28 from 6pm to 9pm. One of the tasks to be undertaken is weed removal from the beck as well as litter picking and weeding other areas of the village. St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth, assisted by reader Judith Dean, baptised Anna Fearn Minghella during the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Anna is the daughter of James and Charlotte Minghella. There was also a celebration of Father’s Day with the distribution of chocolate bars and bookmarks with supportive Bible verses. Gisa Moore and Janet Lamb were sidespersons, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Kate Middleton led the prayers and assisted with the distribution of communion. Enid Plevey and Sue Johnson served refreshments. Parish assistant Wendy Haslam led the 11am service of modern worship. Reader Judith Dean preached, emphasising that Jesus did not just teach about the nature of God but showed that love to those he encountered through his actions, healing the sick and meeting people's physical and emotional needs. Val Goddard gave the reading and John Haslam and Tim Cremer led the intercessions. The sung worship was led by Richard Fuller with Steve Raettig, John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Elizabeth Bradley and Julie Hall served refreshments after the service.

Strawberry teas - The Friends of Seamer Village will be holding its annual strawberry teas afternoon on Sunday, from 2pm on the village green. Note this is a change of date.

SHERBURN

Community club - The community and sports club’s fun day and car boot sale will be held on Sunday from noon when the bar will also open. Attractions include a raffle, Eagle Eye Falconry, tombola, crazy golf, dog show barbecue, cake stall, bric-a-brac and refreshments. Car boot sellers can set up from 11am at £5 per car. To book a car boot pitch text your name to 07824 696921or call into the club. Entry is free. The events are to raise funds towards new play equipment for the children’s play area. Because of the annual fun day, the monthly quiz night is has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 2 at 8pm. The Vegas Casino Company will be at the club for a fun night of roulette and blackjack on Friday, July 14 at 8pm. People can buy 30 chips for £10 to play at either table. The person with the most chips at the end of the night wins a cash prize. Free entry for all, including non- members.

Methodist news - The Sunday worship was led by Tom Clayton. The welcomer was Liz Aconley, the organist was Chris Cade and audio-visual equipment was operated by Luke Heron. The lesson from Matthew’s Gospel was read by Janet Magee and told the story of Jesus sending out the twelve disciples. Tom spoke about stepping out of people’s faith comfort zone. After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Michael Earnshaw.

SLINGSBY

Ladies group -Seventeen members of the Ladies Group had a fun quiz night based on Who Wants to be a Millionaire on Tuesday, June 13. The group’s next meeting is on Tuesday, July 11 at 7.15pm in the Methodist Hall when the group will be a talk about coastlines given by Terry Frazier of the National Trust. New members welcome.

STAPE

Village hall -There will be an open meeting held in the village hall on Friday, June 30 at 7pm. The main item on the agenda will be Do the villagers of Stape want a village hall. After discussion, a vote will take place to determine the future of the hall.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - Winners of the meeting on Monday, June 12, were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 57.6 per cent. In second place with 55.5 per cent were Bob and Gladys Thompson.

WESTOW

Summer fair - The annual Westow Cricket Club summer fair will be held on Sunday from 10.30am until 1.30pm. There are various stalls selling local and handmade goods. The cricket club are having a cake and home baking stall, a tombola and serving tea, coffee, cake and cold drinks. The summer draw will also take place. There will be a display of Baroque dancing as well as an opportunity to have a go. Junior cricketers will have a practice and a there will be a game. Entry is free. Anyone wishing to have a stall, costing £5, phone Julie Price on 01653 618214. Stalls will be inside and outside the cricket pavilion. Car booters, traders and craft stalls are welcome.

WOMBLETON

Great Get Together - The village Great Get Together to commemorate Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox, who was murdered last year, was held on the playing field on Sunday. Afternoon tea, a barbecue, children’s games and competitions raised more than £500 for the village hall and sports field. The organisers want to thank the many local businesses and residents who donated prizes and baking, and everyone who helped in to make it an enjoyable and successful day.

Domino drive - The next domino drive in the village hall to raise funds for the hall is on Saturday, at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits. There will also be a domino drive on Wednesday, July 5.

YCA REPORT

Rillington - Sixteen members were present at the June meeting of Rillington and District YCA held in the village hall. Three new members were welcomed to the meeting - all were members of the now defunct Sherburn branch. Jean Hardy gave a talk called Confessions of a Hoarder. She spoke about her life as a teacher in both Leeds and China and showed some of the treasures she had collected throughout her life. Caroline Neuff proposed the vote of thanks. Jean judged the competition for the best small bargain and awarded first prize to Valerie Gilbert and second to Sue Butler.

The Hunmanby branch have sent a copy of their 2017/18 programme with an open invitation for Rillington members to attend one or more of their meetings. A report on the YCA annual general meeting at Askham Bryan was given by the three delegates who had attended. The evening’s hostesses were Marjorie Grice and Louise Tindall. Lorna Mastaglio sold tickets for the raffle. The July meeting, which is open to family and friends, is a visit to East Heslerton Museum and Garden.
