A MALTON Consulting Engineer has recently taken over the reins as Master of the York Guild of Building.

Alan Mitchell has run maltech, civil and structural engineering practice in Newgate, for over 17 years and been involved in projects ranging from many local domestic jobs through to detailed design of the Sage building in Gateshead, Jack Berry House in Malton and designing a steel, multi-storey building in the Philippines.

The York Guild of Building is one of the many Guilds that are active in York. It was set up by Sir Peter Shepherd in 1954 as a modern version of a medieval Guild. At the time its purpose was to address the shortage of skilled, traditional craftsmen in the City and the concern that we wouldn’t be able to look after some of the most precious buildings in York in the future.

Alan said: Today the Guild continues in this vein by trying to encourage the understanding of the problems and achievements of those engaged in building. It has close links with York College Construction Department and recently presented a number of medals to exceptional students.

It recognises the quality of good construction and will, in the autumn, be judging and awarding prizes for good craftsmanship on projects in the local area.

Alan added that the Guild supported the other York Guilds and has links with similar Guilds in Richmond and strong links with some of those in London.

“The Guild is open to those engaged in the Building Industry in York and the surrounding area. As well as talks on relevant topics visiting construction sites and workshops the Guild does have a lighter side,” he added.

“One traditional role is its involvement in the Wagon Plays and the Guild has a covered, wooden cart that is pushed around the streets of York (by Guild members dressed in medieval costume) and from which a pop-up show is performed showing Gods’ Creation of the World

Alan said: “I am looking forward to a busy and enjoyable programme and taking the Guild forward for another successful year.”
