OBITUARY

John ‘Jack’ West A service in memory of John (Jack) West was held at St Andrew’s Church, Bugthorpe, on Friday, May 19, and was followed by internment in the church yard. The service was conducted by the Rev Chris Wingfield, assisted by Curate Hannah Suekarran. The organist was Daphne Smithson. Donations in lieu of flowers were for St Andrew’s Church funds and St Leonard’s Hospice. John, who died on May 4, was born in Bugthorpe to Harry and Gladys West on May 25, 1924, and had two older sisters and one younger brother. His father died when he was quite young leaving his mother to bring up the four children on her own. John first went to Bugthorpe School and then to Fishergate School where he became head boy. John was a choirboy and server at Bugthorpe Church. He also sang in York Minster as a young boy. On leaving school he became a ‘bound apprentice’ to F R Taylor & Son, in York, until he was called up for the Second World War. John saw service as a despatch rider and was at the D-Day landings and later went on to Buchenwald and Auschwitz prisons camps where sights there filled him with great sadness. After the war he returned to work at Taylors who had a contract to work on the Halifax Estates. When their contract ended, the estate agent asked John if he would take on their work. It was at that point John decided to become self-employed and was the Halifax Estates plumber for more than 50 years until he retired, leaving the business to his only son Nigel. John married Ethel Howden on Boxing Day 1949. John’s main hobby was cricket. He played for the village team at Bugthorpe, serving as both its secretary and treasurer. Later he played for both Stamford Bridge and Clifton Cricket Club. On retiring from playing he umpired for Stamford Bridge and served as chairman for nearly 20 years. John took an active interest in the running of Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute and was its chairman for many years. He was delighted when they were awarded a £50,000 National Lottery grant which enabled it to make many improvements. John had lived in Bugthorpe for 88 years before moving to Stamford Bridge. He was a larger than life character who enjoyed socialising and following cricket and sport on television.
