A FAMILY who have received a wealth of support from a Ryedale-based charity are taking on a “madness” climbing challenge.

Niki Garrard and Jez Rose are aiming to tackle six mountains in three days as part of Millie’s Mountain Madness to raise funds for Ryedale Special Families (RSF).

Jez said: “My 19-year-old daughter Amelia, who is known as Millie, has received a wealth of support and help from the gifted and caring people who together through their dedication make RSF the fantastic organisation it is for almost all her life.

“Their impact on her personal development is immeasurable, without their expert advice, guidance and tireless efforts to provide entertainment, education, respite and family oriented social events Amelia would not have had half the life she has enjoyed to date.

“On a personal level much of the worry and stress of being a parent to a child with special needs has been relieved simply by knowing help and advice is always available.

“I’ve known for some while now that it is high time I gave something back as thanks for their extraordinary efforts, so with the excellent company, infectious humour, encouragement and support of my partner Niki, we have committed ourselves to summit on foot six UK peaks over three days.”

Between June 30 and July 2, the couple will ascend a total of 4,486 metres, which is their target figure to raise.

Day one will begin in Wales with the ascent of Snowdon, via The Pyg Track, then a drive to Scafell Pike in the English Lake District, where they will follow the Wasdale Head route to the summit.

Day two will see them aim to complete the Yorkshire three peaks walk, while day three is Scotland’s Ben Nevis.

“We would love to have friends and family join us for some sections of our challenge, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis are the two where we could enjoy the mountain walk with others, so if anyone wishes to join us they are very welcome,” he said.

“Niki and I have been training on and off since last year in all weathers as it’s been our goal to support such a fantastic cause since Niki came up with the idea while walking last year.”

Jez said they were looking for sponsorship from individuals and businesses.

“Every penny raised will go towards helping children like Millie with their individual special needs and those of their families too so they can continue to have access to the same support, advice and days of enjoyment that we have enjoyed,” he said.

“Ryedale Special Families provide these things every day to so many, all these things are vital for personal growth, for education and family togetherness, an opportunity to have fun time away from the pressures of life. Millie has come so far in her life thanks to their love, support and understanding of her needs.

“We are not asking for mountains of cash but we are asking for your generosity and in return we have set ourselves what we believe to be a suitably formidable challenge, one worthy of contributions.
