ACKLAM

Moveable feast - The village’s annual moveable feast on Friday, May 19 raised more than £1,600 for the Church of St John the Baptist funds. More than 100 people took part in the event.

Quiz - There will be a quiz with cash prizes and a free supper at the Half Moon Inn on Friday, June 9, starting at 8.30pm. There will be a maximum of four people per team. The pub hosts live country music every Monday at 9pm and bridge sessions on Wednesday from 7.30pm.

Sports and Gymkhana - The annual Acklam Sports and Gymkhana will be held on Saturday, June 3. It will include a dog show, hound trials, equestrian events, athletics, country sports, classic cars, vintage tractors, terrier racing, as well as a beer and refreshments tent.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Cleaning up - The latest meeting of the village hall management committee was held last Wednesday in the village hall. It was agreed that a vacuum cleaner be purchased. A window cleaner has agreed to call twice a year to do the external and internal cleaning. A cleaning day is to be held on Saturday, June 24 from 10am until 3pm. The summer feast and barbecue will be held on Saturday, July 29 starting at 4.30pm. Sinnington Play Group have asked about the availability of the hall during the day for a two-month period while their hall is closed for building work. When art classes finish for the summer break there will be yoga classes. The history group hope to hold a book launch for their latest publication, Luminaries of Appleton-le-Moors, in mid-July.

Back to back - The village’s alpaca back to back challenge held on the weekend of May 9 and 10 raised £1,200 for Macmillan Cancer Suport. The concept was to get the fleece from the animal’s back to a person’s in the shortest possible time. The challenge was an informal event which brought together the community, promoted the alpaca industry and demonstrated the crafts involved. Shearing took place in public on Saturday morning and the spinning team started their work at 11.45am with the first stitch cast about half-an-hour later. The knitters continued through Saturday with the jumper being sewn up on Sunday afternoon. Bob Shaw and Moorside Alpacas donated shearing fees, the Moors Inn sponsored the raffle and provided hospitality, the village hall committee donated refreshment proceeds and an army of carders, spinners, knitters and scarf monitors worked hard through the weekend.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

May market - The annual May market will be held on Saturday in the village hall from 10am to 1pm. Entry is £1.50 and includes refreshments. There will be a variety of stalls including bric-a-brac, cakes and plants etc. The event is in aid of Martin House, a hospice for children and young people.

Quiz - The previously cancelled quiz will take place on Friday, June 2 starting at 7pm. Entrance is £4 to include supper. Quizzers can take their own bottle, but a glass of wine can be purchased on the night.

BULMER

Bridge club - Winners of the session held on Thursday, May 18 were Val and Michael Allen with 66.3 per cent. Second were Sandy and Peter Hill with 59.7 per cent.

FARNDALE

Hospice fundraiser - There will be a general knowledge quiz in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice in the Feversham Arms Inn on Friday, June 2 at 8pm. Teams should have a maximum of four people. Entry is £2 per person and there will be cash prizes with £30 for the winners, £25 for the runners-up and £15 for third. The evening will include a buffet and a raffle. The question master will be Mick Stanley.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a quiz at the Crown Inn on Sunday, June 4 at 8.30pm to raise funds for St Chad’s Church. It is £2 to enter. There will be a sandwich supper and the prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown Inn.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting in June will have a garden theme.

Bridge Club - The summer lunch will be held on Tuesday, June 6.

Summer fair - All Saints Church will host a summer fair in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 29.

Open gardens - The garden of Penny Piece Cottage, 41 Piercy End, will be open on Sunday, June 11 as part of the National Garden Scheme. Viewing is from noon to 5pm.

Band concert - The town band’s next ticket concert, Journey's in Brass, will be at Stockton-on-the-Forest on Saturday, June 17. For further details phone the band manager on 01751 432813.

Horticultural Society - Entries for the society’s quiz sheet are due to be returned on Saturday, May 27. The open show will be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 23.

Marie Curie - The gardens at Sleightholmedale will be open to the public on Wednesday, June 7 and Sunday, July 30 to raise funds for Kirkbymoorside Marie Curie support group. Tea will be served from 1pm to 6pm. The car fundraising boot sale at Welburn Manor will be held on Sunday, June 25. 

MALTON

Flower club - The May meeting of Malton and District Flower Club featured a talk by horticulturalist, writer and radio and television presenter Martin Fish, whose gardens at Rainton club members are visiting in June. Martin's commentary and slide show called My Life in Gardening - So Far included his experiences from his teens working in a parks’ department through to recent years of his broadcasting, the life of a Harrogate Show director and RHS judge. The club is taking part in Slingsby Flower Festival on Friday, June 23, Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 and Malton in Bloom on Saturday, July 15. Prize bingo - The monthly prize bingo to raise funds for the village hall will be held at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 4 in the village hall.

Plant sale - Pickering and District Horticultural Society will be holding its annual plant sale in the Market Place from 8.30am on Saturday, May 27.

Quiz -The Bay Horse, Market Place, will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Probus club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, May 9 for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel under the chairmanship of Anthony Brown. Malcolm Smith, of Scarborough Probus Club), spoke about his experiences during his 24 years as a magistrate. Two new members were admitted to the club. Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society met in the Memorial Hall last week when Dr David Pool of Fish Science Ltd who gave a talk about how to prevent illness in aquarium fishes. Paul Barrow judged the table show and awarded first place to a Harlequin Rajbora owned by Steven Russell. The society’s next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 14 at the Potter Hill home of Sue and David Marshall at 7.30pm.

Fleamarket - The town’s fleamarket, craft and gift fair which is held at the Liberal Club, Smiddy Hill, will be open for four days over the coming Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday, May 27 to Tuesday, May 30, 10am to 4pm each day. The fleamarket supports the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with a tombola stall, which last year raised £280. After this weekend, the fleamarket will open every Monday and Tuesday until early October.

PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimental Engineering and Model Society held at the WRVS Hungate Centre, on Wednesday, June 7 at 7pm.

Jazz festival - The fifth annual Ryedale Jazz Festival will be held in the town from Sunday, July 23 to Saturday, July 29. Tickets costs for the Monday to Saturday concerts are £10 per concert if purchased before the end of this month. It is £12 after Wednesday, May 31. Tribute act - The Kirk Theatre is selling tickets for a Tina Turner tribute evening on Saturday. Doors will open at 6.45pm with the performance starting at 7.30pm.

Beck Isle Museum - Beck Isle Museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday with a day of activities as the museum looks back to the 1960s when it was founded. There will be free admission to see displays of memorabilia and photographs from Pickering, listen to your favourite 1960s record and visit the village shop to buy a handful of penny sweets. The museum will be open from 10am with last admissions at 4pm.

Music and words - Singer Paul Wheater, from Whitby, who has appeared at the London Palladium, will be performing at the Methodist Church on Saturday, June 3 at 7pm. The evening also features Barry Woodward, from Bolton, author of the book Once an Addict, who will share his life story. Light refreshments will be available afterwards.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - A total of £370 was raised for All Saints Church, Thorpe Bassett, at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next bingo in the Centre will be on Wednesday, June 21 and is for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Ladies Guild - Eleven members and one prospective member were present at the May meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild held in Woodlands Community Centre. The speaker, Kevin Hutchinson, spoke about the work of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and how the charity operates. He was thanked by Judy Duke, who also sold tickets for the raffle. The evening’s hostesses were Janet Clarkson and Valerie Gilbert. The annual general meeting, which had been held over from April, followed. Officers elected were president, provisionally, Jacqueline Wood; vice-president, Elizabeth Saint; treasurer, Judy Duke; minutes secretary, Louise Tindall; deputy minutes secretary, Sue Butler and programme secretary, Valerie Gilbert. The annual outing will be held on Thursday, June 15 with members meeting in the Coach and Horses car park for shared transport to Sledmere House and Gardens.

Whist winners - The winners of a progressive whist drive held in Woodlands Community Centre were Robin King, Margaret King, Kath Horsley, Olive Birkett, Joyce Smith, Eric Copeland, M Jeffery, Kath Samples and Penny Teasdale.

Quiz - Eight teams playing for £64 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Eggheads, second were Trio + one and third, after a tie break, Weaverthorpe 4, who also won the £15 jackpot. Mike’s next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, June 2. Honeymooners plus Mike won Jennie’s Sunday night quiz.

On song - Female vocalist Becky will be singing in the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

RYEDALE

Parkinson’s Support - Spring meetings of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group have been well supported by sufferers of Parkinson’s and their carers. In April, members and friends enjoyed lunch at the Steam and Moorland Garden Centre, Pickering, and the May meeting was a visit to Sutton Bank Visitor Centre with a short walk to the viewpoint where members could see the views over Lake Gormire and the valley. SEAMER

Methodists news - The service on Sunday was taken by Patricia Mollon. The vestry steward was Bert Blower. The welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering, and Sarah Andrews accompanied on piano. Bible readings were given by Denise Earnshaw, who read Psalm 66, and Michael King, who read from John’s gospel. In her sermon Mrs Mollon spoke of Jesus promising the disciples the Holy Spirit. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Christine Herbert. The calligraphy group has now broken up for the summer months.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion, assisted by reader Elizabeth Moreland, who also preached. Her sermon reflected on the gospel reading where Jesus teaches his disciples to have courage as he leaves them to return to his Father. Elizabeth and Kate Middleton assisted in the distribution of communion, Dot Francis and Clare Firth were sidespersons, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Enid Plevey and Sue Johnson served refreshments. Elizabeth Moreland preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which she also led. Liz Cremer gave the bible reading and Tim Cremer led the intercessions. Jenny Bland and Elizabeth Bradley ran the Sunday Club. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with John and Sue Grice (guitar and bass) and John Taylor (drums). Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Project cancelled - At a recent meeting of St Hilda’s Parochial Church Council, it was decided that the proposed project of building a toilet in the Church should be cancelled. The problems of siting a toilet together with the regulations and the escalating costs of suitable materials in comparison with the relatively few times the church is used and the decreasing congregations render the project unfeasible. Any reasonable funds will be returned on application to the treasurer, Keith Usher, 3 Eastbeck Close, Sherburn, phone 01944 711448 unless the donor wishes them to be retained towards helping to keep the church open.

Luncheon club - Members of the Senior Citizen Luncheon Club met in the Methodist Chapel Hall for a soup and salad lunch. They all hurried home to watch one of the members, Barbara Grice, compete on the television programme 15 to 1. Since it was filmed Barbara has had a stay in hospital and members wish her a speedy recovery. The next meeting of the Luncheon club will be on Wednesday, June 21, 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Coffee morning - The Christian Aid coffee morning, an ecumenical event, was held at the chapel and has so far raised £237. There is still time to donate or bring in your envelope to the chapel’s Tuesday coffee morning. The winner of the food parcel was Stella Boyes.

Methodist news - The family film club enjoyed watching the movie Robinson Crusoe. Sunday morning worship was led by Janette Biltcliffe. The welcomer was Kim Canterbury, the organist was Chris Cade and the audio-visual equipment was operated by Liz Aconley. Janette spoke of the reunion of the disciples with Jesus after His resurrection. After the worship refreshments were enjoyed in the Hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Kath Charter.

Letters draw - The winner of £480 in Sherburn FC’s weekly letter draw on Saturday was B Langstaff of Severfield. The letters were B, R and H. The prize fund this week is £60.

Live act - The Community and Sports Club welcomes back Sammi Lee who will be performing from 9pm on Saturday. There will be a late bar. The club’s monthly quiz will be held on Sunday at 8pm.

SLINGSBY

Ladies Group - On Tuesday, May 9, 20 members visited the Pickering garden of Jeff Andrews on Tuesday, May 9. It started with a tour round his museum, an Aladdin’s cave of memorabilia. Tea and cake were enjoyed in his wild garden. Julie Ryan will give a talk on the International Rescue Corps at the next meeting on Tuesday, June 13 at 7.15pm in the Methodist Hall. New members are welcome.

SNAINTON

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Concert - Thornton-le-Dale Methodist Church is celebrating its108th anniversary with a concert given by the Singing for Pleasure Choir on Saturday, June 3 at 7pm. A collection will be taken for church funds and a supper will follow the concert.

Bridge club - The competition held on Monday, May 15 was won by Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth with 60.4 per cent. In second place were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 59.4 per cent.

WESTOW

All Stars - Westow Cricket Club held its first session of ECB All Stars, cricket for five to eight-year-olds on Sunday. More than 17 children attended and took part in various ball related activities. Sixteen other children, aged between eight and 12 years were also practicing their cricket skills, with a fun game of cricket. Tea, coffee and home baking was available throughout the event.

Car boot - There will be a car boot and garage sale around households in the village and at the cricket ground on Sunday from 10am until 1pm. Stalls are £5 and are bookable in advance. The cricket club will be having a stall in the cricket pavilion, as well as serving tea, coffee and cake in aid of club funds. Maps of the village detailing which houses are selling their unwanted items from their garages and front gardens will also be available from the pavilion. For more details phone Julie Price on 01653 618214.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - The next domino drive to raise funds for the village hall will be on Wednesday, May 31 at 7.30pm. Please note change of date. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

WI REPORT

Thornton-le-Dale - Margaret Smith presided at the May meeting. Birthday cards were presented to Lesley Mitchell, Nancy Firth, Carol Rynehart and Margaret Smith. The teams for the WI quiz were chosen. Several members were interested in the boules session to be held in the village hall garden. Members also signed lists to take part in workshops to make Alice bands and willow obelisks. Dates for these two events have yet to be arranged. Seven members had enjoyed a walk around Welburn and Castle Howard. The next walk is planned for Friday, June 9 when Karen Hyatt will lead a walk on the Wolds Way from West Heslerton. The Dark Self exhibition takes place in York during the summer and two members of the branch have submitted embroidered pillowcases for the exhibition so members were encouraged to make a visit it. June will be a busy month, with trips to Jackson’s Wold Garden and RAF Fylingdales planned. There is no meeting in the village hall in June. After the business, members enjoyed a taster session of Lishi Tai Chi with Phil Winskill. Everyone was guided through some of the simpler movements and given information about the principles of Tai Chi. Phil was thanked by Heather Chaplin. Refreshments were served by Mary Richardson and Betty Walker, who had provided some cakes. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 11 when the branch will host a village fete with boules and games. Other local WIs are being invited to join us for what is hoped to be a fun evening.
