A FORMER businessman has set up a weekly car boot sale in Malton in a bid to attract more people to the town.

David Leppington, who ran Howe Road paper shop in Norton, for 21 years, is running the event each Sunday in Wentworth Street car park.

He said: “I recently contacted Ryedale District Council (RDC) asking if they would be interested in letting me run a car boot sale on Wentworth Street Car Park on a Sunday.

“They said that they would be very interested and have been very supportive offering me part of the car park on Sundays.”

David said the initial car boot sales had received a lot of positive feedback and hoped they would continue to be a regular weekly feature.

“The car park is an ideal site as it doesn’t matter if it is wet and there are toilet facilities,” he said.

“We are also offering free four charity stalls a week and hope the car boot sale will get more people to visit Malton on a Sunday and encourage more of the shops to open.”

A spokesman for RDC said: “The car boot sale is to be trialled over the next three Sundays, and it would be great to see it do well.

“It’s something that the council is happy to support, by allowing the use the top deck of Wentworth Street car park.”

Entry to the car boot sale, which takes place from 10am to 1pm, is £5 and £10 for vans.

Admission for the public is 50p.
