ACKLAM

Church service - There will be a traditional Holy Communion celebration at the Church of St John the Baptist on Sunday May at 9am.

Moveable feast - The village’s moveable feast, which is raising money for church funds, will be held at five venues on Friday, May 19 from 6.30pm. Tickets, which cost £15, are available by phoning 01653 658351.

Music nights - There is live country music every Monday at the Half Moon Inn. On Monday, May 15 Brian Gibson will start his set at 9pm. On the first Friday of each month there is also an open mic night with house band Resurrection Men starting at 8.30pm. The pub is also hosting a quiz with cash prizes and a free supper on Friday at 8.30pm.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Coffee morning - The annual coffee morning in aid of chapel and church funds held in the village hall on May Day Bank Holiday Monday raised £430 to be shared equally. Stallholders and helpers were Lorraine and Muir Baxter, Jean Claude and Valerie Bullidon, Jill and Roy Hiatt, Lesley Jones, Katrina Lane, Margaret Leckenby, Margaret Strickland and Anne Wilson. The doorkeeper was Malcolm Leckenby.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Market - Brompton’s annual May Market, a seasonal table top sale, will be held on Saturday, May 27 in the village hall from 10am until 1pm. Entrance will be £1.50 to include refreshments. If anyone has something to sell they can rent a table for £5. To book a table, or to donate things to sell, phone Di Ford on 01723 859211. Proceeds this year are for St Martin House, a hospice for children and young people.

Church - The gift day for All Saints raised £1,375, plus a further £100 for the church fabric fund. The service on Sunday will be morning prayer at 11am. It will be led by Dr Don Jones using the Book of Common Prayer. Terry Cartlidge will be the organist.

HELMSLEY

Ladies Luncheon Club - The group met on Wednesday, May 3 at the Black Swan Hotel. After lunch, the president, Elizabeth Wilson, welcomed Rebecca Tucker from Whitby Jet, who gave a talk about her work as a jeweller using jet. Members examined a collection of pieces of her work and some antique examples. A vote of thanks was given by Diana Gaunt. The club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Black Swan Hotel and welcomes new members. For information on joining phone 01439 770596.

HOVINGHAM

Market - The village market on Saturday was a great success. The Coronation Green was used as a car park and at 10.30am was full, though there was still room for street parking. Eight volunteers helped set up at 7.30am. The launch of the electrification of the village clock made more than £100. Customers had a chance to buy a minute for a £1 and when the clock was spun the winner won £10. Josh, the busker, performed but cannot be at the June market so the organisers are looking for a new recruit. Anyone interested should email Phil at themarket@hovingham.org.uk Scackleton Action Group did well and even had customers sitting on outside tables. The next market is on Saturday, June 3.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bookworms - The Library Reading Group will meet on Monday, May 15 at 2.30pm to discuss The Muse, written by Jessie Burton. It will be exchanged for The Improbability of Love by author Hannah Rothschild. There will also be a brief discussion on a new contact person for members and library management, group library card use, recommendations for the next book to order from North Yorkshire County Council library system to distribute at June meeting and the forthcoming payment of subscriptions.

Domino drive -The Kirkbymoorside support group for St Catherine’s Hospice will hold a domino drive at Manor Close centre on Wednesday, May 17 at 7.30pm.

Bridge club - Mary Mortenson and Chris Baxter were top at North/South with 62 per cent. Gill and Trevor Hardcastle were second on 54 per cent.

East/West winners were Christine Brett and Clarissa Napier with 65 per cent, Anne Smith and Graeme Matthew made 57 per cent for second place. A well bid and played game in clubs earned play of the week for Angela Smith and Pat Hainsworth.

Moorside Bar & Club - Sean Leonard, will be the entertainer at the club on Saturday with his act starting at 8.30pm.

Messy Church - There will be a session of Messy Church at the Methodist Church on Monday, May 15 from 4pm to 6pm.

Band concert- The band’s next ticket concert, Journey's in Brass, will be at Stockton-on-the-Forest on Saturday, June 17. For further details phone the band manager on 01751 432813.

Classic vehicles -The second Father’s Day Classic Vehicle Show will be held at the Moorside Bar & Club on Sunday, June 18, from 11am to 5pm. Last year’s event attracted a selection of about 50 cars, lorries, tractors and motorcycles. There is no charge for anyone wishing to bring their vehicles for display. Anyone interested in bringing their vehicle, or if anyone would like a table for an auto jumble, please contact the organisers. Admission to view the vehicles is £1 per adult and under 16s free if accompanied. There will be a barbecue, tea, coffee, soft drinks and other refreshments available. The club bar will be open. Annual meeting - Kirkbymoorside War Memorial Hall will be holding its annual general meeting on Monday, May 15 at 7pm in The Dugout at the hall. Anyone interested in joining the committee or just wanting to find out more about the hall and the town’s weekly market are welcome to attend.

Camera club - Ian Newton gave a talk called Iceland, Land of Fire, Ice and Midges, to members of Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club at the Moorside Bar and Club, Shaw Drive, last Thursday. An avid bird photographer, he showed a wide range of Icelandic ducks and birds which he took on a recent tour of the country. The next meeting at the club is the best of the year competition for projected digital images on Thursday, May 18.

LEAVENING

Show time - The village show will be held on Saturday, September 9. Buckets and potatoes are available from Boundale Farm, for those wishing to enter in the potato in a bucket class. Other classes include tomatoes, courgettes, raspberries, beans and tray of mixed vegetables. There is also preserve classes including fruit jelly, fruit curd, mint jelly, blackcurrant jam and chutney. Photography classes will be photographs, garden wildlife, a tree, holiday picture, favourite view, transport and my family. For more details get in touch with Nancy Spencer at Boundale Farm.

Found - A mock leather jacket with green tartan lining has been hanging up in the church for a long time, possibly since the pudding evening in February.

MALTON

Bridge club - Graham Burgess and Jonathan Allison won the final round of Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs competition with 62.2 per cent and thereby secured the overall victory. Runners-up on the night were Ed Robinson and Dave Massey with 56 per cent with Stan Bough and John Bramall taking third place with 55.3 per cent. In second place in the overall competition were Tricia Pearce and Annette Jackson while Philip Mason and Richard Hilton came third. The club now moves into its summer season where newcomers, visitors and all non-members are welcome and players may turn up without a pre-arranged partner. PICKERING

Tribute acts - There will be two tribute acts at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, starting at 7.30pm with Red Mick providing the music of Mick Hucknall and Simply Red. That will be followed by Sean Maloney as Meatloaf. Tickets cost £15 and include a disco and food. The Kirk Theatre is selling tickets for a Tina Turner tribute evening on Saturday, May 27. Doors will open at 6.45pm with the performance starting at 7.30pm. The act Full Nelson returns to the theatre on Friday, May 19 at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought in advance or on the night.

Plant sale - The Hardy Plant Group of the Pickering Horticultural Society will be holding its annual plant sale and coffee morning on Saturday, May 20 in the WRVS Hungate Centre, from 10am to 1pm. Entry is free and there will be many interesting and unusual plants grown by members.

Domino drive - Pickering Cricket Club will be holding a domino drive at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Thursday, May 25 at 7.30pm.

Welcome Church - Every Sunday at 3pm the Welcome Church meets in the Mill Suite, Memorial Hall, for lively worship, talks, and discussion with both children and weekly activities.

Annual sale - The annual stall for the Pickering and District Horticulture Society will be held on Saturday, May 27 in the Market Place, from 8.30am. The stall will include bedding and vegetable plants, pot plants and many other things.

Quiz night - The Bay Horse, Market Place will host a general knowledge quiz in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Farmers’ market - The monthly farmers’ market will be held in the Market Place on Thursday, May 18 from 8.30am.

Meditation - Kadampa teacher Richard Brown takes place every Wednesday at the Friends’ Meeting House, Castlegate, until May 24, and again from June 7 to July 12. It is £6 per class or £20 for four classes.

Weekly draw - Last week’s main prize of £75 in the weekly Pickering Town FC draw was not won. The numbers were 6, 38 and 28. This week’s draw will be for £150. To join the draw, which costs £1 per entry per week, call at Dunning Butchers, Bridge Street, or get in touch any Pickering Town FC committee member. The May monthly consolation draw was also made last week and the £50 winner was M Sonley of Pickering with his winning numbers 6 and 38. Car show - Pickering’s annual Modified Car Show, in its 11th year, will take place on Sunday, June 18 from 9am to 5pm.

RILLINGTON

Quiz time - Twelve teams playing for £92 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Honeymooners, second were Trio + one and third Team @ the Bar. The booby prize was awarded to No Brainers who also won the £20 jackpot. Mike’s next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, May 19.

Exhibition - The second local arts and handicrafts exhibition will be held in the church rooms and village hall on Saturday from 10am to 5.30pm. Admission is free but donations would be appreciated. Proceeds are going to community projects. Refreshments will be available from the Community Café.

Music night - Highway 61 will be playing American slide blues and old time classics in the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9.30pm.

Bingo - A prize bingo session will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, May 17 with proceeds going to All Saints Church, Thorpe Bassett. Doors open at 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Derek Orwin. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, the organist was Doreen Lawson and the the welcomer was Margaret Neave, who also took the collection. Bible readings were given by Alan Dunnington, who read from John’s gospel, Sheena Dunnington, who read from the book of Acts and Tina Greenley, who read from Peter. In his address, Mr Orwin said that in the bible Jesus was often referred to as the Good Shepherd who cared for and loved his sheep. Jesus told the disciples that they had to become like shepherds and reach out with care and friendship to the people. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Lorraine Booth. The monthly coffee morning is on Saturday at 10.30am. The summer concerts start on Saturday, May 20 with Simply Brass.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. As his text, Richard used the gospel reading of Jesus referring to himself as the Good Shepherd, and used this section to highlight the challenge of listening but not hearing what people say. He used the 23rd Psalm to remind the congregation that everyone needs ‘quiet waters’, where we can be still and hear the word of God. Enid Plevey and Carol Beswick were the sidespersons. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Janet Lamb and Clare Firth served refreshments. Reader John Wells led the 11am service of modern worship and preached on Jesus' depiction of himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. Jan Wells led the intercessions, and also offered prayer ministry during the sung worship, which was led by Richard Fuller with John and Sue Grice. Liz Cremer read and Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club. Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson and Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Messy Church - There will be a session of Messy Church at the chapel on Saturday when youngsters will be exploring the parable of the lost coin with stories, craft, songs and games. Children should meet for tea at 4.45pm but should be accompanied by an adult.

Lunch date - Members of the Senior Citizens Luncheon Club will be meeting from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm on Wednesday, May 17. Transport within the village can be arranged by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Letters draw - Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters F N S. As there was no winner, next week’s draw prize fund will be £420.

Methodist news - The minister, the Rev Denise Free, conducted the Holy Communion service for its chapel anniversary celebration. The steward was Jean Brown and the welcomer was Christine Pickard. The readers were Luke Heron, Jenny Ireland and Rosemary Dawson. The organist was Chris Cade, assisted by Ruth Heron on the flute. The offertory steward was Ray Pickard. Afterwards lunch was enjoyed in the hall. The worship on Sunday at 10.30am will be Café Church led by the worship team.

Club performer - Sammi Lee will be making a return visit to perform at the Sports and Community Club on Saturday, May 27 at 9pm. There will be a late bar.

WEAVERTHORPE

Jumble sale – There will be a jumble sale in the village hall on Saturday, May 20 from 1pm to 2.30pm. Admission is £1 for adults and includes a drink and biscuit. Accompanied children are free. Jumble can be donated from 11.30am but electrical items cannot be accepted. Proceeds from the sale will be divided between village organisations. WI REPORTS

Appleton-le-Moors - Mrs Humphreys presided at the April meeting which started with demonstration of how to make French macarons. The branch welcomed back Fraser and Kate from the York Cookery School who guided members step by step how to make the little sweet treats. Two members showed their skill at piping out the macarons. As there was not time to bake them Kate had brought with her some she made earlier. After a short business meeting members sat down to supper. This month’s speaker will be Richard Smith who will give a talk called Blowing His Own Trumpet.

Helmsley - Nineteen members, including one new member attending the meeting on Thursday, April 27. Angela Harrison, a therapist at the North Yorkshire Music Therapy Centre, gave a talk on the work that is done to help children with autism and to help them overcome their challenges. Refreshments were served by Sonia and Paddy and the raffle drawn. The competition for a decorated egg was won by Denise with Helen and Noelle coming second and third respectively. There will be no meeting this month as it is the annual outing for members only. The next meeting will be in June when chocolatier Andrew Thwaite will provide an evening of indulgence.
