APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Common Protection Association - A meeting of the Common Protection Association will be held in the village hall on Thursday, April 13 at 7.15pm.

Easter afternoon tea - There will be afternoon tea and an Easter bonnet competition in the village hall from 3.30pm until 5.30pm on Easter Monday, April 17. Entry is £5.The event is a fundraiser for the village hall.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Holy Communion at 11am and will be conducted by the Vicar. The church is open for visitors in daylight hours.

Domino drive - The last of this season’s domino drives was held in the village hall last Friday. Dorothy Pennock was the evening’s winner with top score of 124 followed by J Simpson with 112. Carol Cockerill won the accumulator prize with 624 points collected over the whole season. A raffle was held and supper was prepared and served by A Tidd and D Ford. The amount raised on the evening was £134.78, and this will go towards the upkeep of the village hall. David and Elaine Mudd organised the domino drives throughout the winter months and as thanks for their efforts, were presented with flowers and wine from the village hall committee.

Coffee morning - There will be a coffee morning in the village hall on Good Friday, April 14.

BULMER

Bridge club - Winners of the bridge club meeting on Thursday, March 23 were Jane Bartlett and Sheila Briske with 60 per cent. Second were Thelma Hardware and Liz Cundall on 59 per cent.

CROPTON

Quiz - There was almost a full house for the Peacock Quiz in the village hall on Friday, March 24. The evening included steak pie, peas and gravy followed by tea and homemade biscuits. A raffle was drawn. A total of £291 was raised for hall funds.

FARNDALE

Book sale - There will be a sale of books and other items sale in the village hall at Church Houses on Saturday from 11am. Teas will be available.

HOVINGHAM

Village market - The next village market will be held on Saturday when there will be more 50 stalls providing an opportunity to buy Easter gifts. The cafe will be run by Hovingham Playground and the volunteer market manager is Tony Mathe.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - A family quiz in aid of St Chad’s Church will be held in the Crown Inn on Sunday, April 9, starting at 8.30pm. It is £2 to enter and includes a sandwich supper. The prize is a voucher to spend at the Crown Inn. Note the change of date.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Give or Take - The Kirkbymoorside Environment Group is holding a Give or Take Day on Sunday, April 23 from 9am to 1pm. Goods may be delivered the previous evening, Saturday, April 22 between 6pm and 8pm or on Sunday from 8am onwards. Refreshments will be available.

Coffee morning - The Kirkbymoorside In Bloom group will be holding a coffee morning in the library building’s Church House on Wednesday, April 5 from 9.30am to noon. There will be hot cross buns and a raffle. An open gardens day is planned for Sunday, June 4. If anyone has a garden they would like to share, phone 01751 430250 for more details.

All Saints - The Pilgrim Discipleship group meet each Wednesday in church at 7.30pm to explore the theme of Turning to Christ. Phone the Rev Mark Brosnan on 01751 431452 for more details. There will be a coffee morning in church on Saturday from 9.30am. On Palm Sunday, April 9, there will be a Parish Eucharist at 10.30am. Tuesday Group - There will be a Spring Fellowship Day at Helmsley on Thursday, April 28 with the Bishop of Hull, the Rt Rev Alison White.

Moorside Bar & Club – On Tuesday, April 11 there will be an Easter prize bingo at the club in aid of Wombleton Wanderers Football Club. Doors open at 7.30pm. A children’s Easter party will be held at the club from 2pm until 5pm on Sunday, April 16. The entertainer on Saturday is Dave Lesley, who will start his act at 8.30pm.

Library - New opening times at the library will come into effect from Saturday. They are Monday 9.30am - 6.30pm, Tuesday closed, Wednesday 9.30am - 5pm, Thursday 9.30am -5pm, Friday 9.30am - 5pm and Saturday 9.30am - 12.30pm.

Bridge club - At the latest game, the North/South pairs had by far the strongest hands. Mary Mortenson and Chris Baxter were top with 64 per cent. Judith O’Donnell and David Whitehead were runners-up on 53 per cent. East/West winners were Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale with 59 per cent. Enid Watson and Tim Johnson were second on 56 per cent. Play of the week went to Christine Roberts Holland and Bryan Wilson.

Horticultural Society - The committee met at the home of Viv Webster to arrange this year’s open show schedule. The classes remaining the same as last year with the exception of the children’s section in the hope to encourage more entries. The open show is on Saturday, September 23 in the Memorial Hall. Reading Group - The Kirkbymoorside Library Reading Group has changed its times. The next meeting will be on Monday, April 3 from 2pm to 3pm to discuss The Lie by Helen Dunmore. After that, the group will meet on the third Monday of the month except for Bank Holidays.

LOCKTON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in aid of St Giles Church on Saturday, April 8 at 7.30pm in the village hall. Admission is £2 to include supper.

MALTON

Annual quiz - Fifty-two teams took part in the 25th annual Sundella Quiz held in Malton School and sponsored by Tate Smith Limited. It raised £2,072 for the Encephalitis Society. The quiz master was Mike Williams. Old Byland All Stars regained the trophy, with Horseshoe B in second place, third were Foxtons Fallible Four, fourth Four Short Planks and fifth Honeymooners.

Practice class - At the March meeting of the Malton and District Flower Club 18 members took part in the practice class, entitled Take 5. The winners were novice, Lorna Mastaglio; intermediate, Kay Clyde; lower advanced, Jan Anderson; advanced, Sally Goodrick. The Bobby Swanton Trophy for the best use of garden foliage was awarded to Sue Harrison. Susan Hall, the judge, gave helpful hints and encouragement. The next meeting on Sunday, April 23, a week later than usual, features a demonstration by Susan Hall called Something New. The annual trip to Martin Fish’s garden takes place on June 20 and the club will be taking part in Slingsby Flower Festival during the last weekend in June and participating in Malton in Bloom in July.

Bridge club - John Hayton and Philip Mason were the winners in the latest round of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMPs Pairs competition with 45 points. Second were Derek Fox and Rob Ashdown with 35 points followed by Mike and Annette Jackson with 32 points. In last Wednesday’s Handicap Pairs, the winners were Philip Mason and Richard Hilton with a net score of 62.3 per cent. In second place were the overall leaders Tricia Pearce and Annette Jackson with 57.5 per cent while Graeme Matthew and Keith Freeman took the third place with 51.1 per cent.

NAWTON

Bingo - The monthly prize bingo to raise funds for the village hall takes place in the hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. Bingo sessions are held on the first Saturday of each month.

Quiz sheet - Friends of Nawton CP School have a spring quiz sheet in circulation. They are available from local outlets in Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside or email friendsofnawtoncp@gmail. Entries should be returned by Friday, April 28 and the results announced at the school’s spring fair on Saturday, May 20. The first prize of £20 has been donated by Beadlam Farm shop and tearoom, the second prize of £15 by Desi Spice Club and the third prize of £10 by Home Decorating Centre of Kirkbymoorside.

Fishkeepers - Ron Atherton of Hartlepool AS will give a talk called My Favourite 20 Aquarium Fishes to Ryedale Aquarist Society in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, April 12 at 7.30pm.

Cinema - The film Rogue One will be screened at the Kirk Theatre on Wednesday, April 5 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

Concert - Tickets are on sale for the Henry Smith Band concert at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday, April 8 starting at 8pm. Fleamarket - Last year the regular fleamarket at the Liberal Club, raised £280 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with tombolas and donations. RILLINGTON

Whist drives - At a meeting of the Over Sixty's Club held in the village hall Eric Copeland presented the prizes to the winners. A progressive whist drive was also held in Woodlands Community Centre. Raffles were held at both drives.

Quiz time - Ten teams playing for £72 in prize money took part in Mike Williams’ general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Honeymooners, second were Team @ the Bar and third Weaverthorpe 4. The £18 jackpot was won by Weaverthorpe 4. Sue’s Crew won the booby prize. Mike’s next quiz at the Fleece will be on Friday, April 7. Jennie’s Sunday night quiz at the Fleece was won by Sue's Crew. The jackpot was a rollover to next week.

Magic - A gourmet magic night is being held at the Fleece Inn on Friday, April 14 from 7pm. A three-course dinner with close-up magic at your table will be followed by a live cabaret show. Bookings can be made by phoning 01944 758464.

SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was led by Bruce Clark. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, the welcomer was Margaret Harris and Macey Burn took the collection. The singing was accompanied by Bruce on guitar and Margaret Neave on the piano. Bible readings were given by Sheena and Alan Dunnington. Bruce referred to the bible readings in his talk. Sweets were given to the congregation to celebrate Mother’s Day by Macey Burn and Cecily Cawood. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Chris Kirkman.

St Martin's - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, preached on John 9, the man born blind, at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion on Sunday. Sidespersons were Jim and Marion Baird and Elizabeth Bradly assisted with the chalice. Janet Lamb and Elizabeth Chapman served refreshments. At Sunday’s 11am service, worship was led by Richard Fuller and the band. The vicar preached at the service and presided at Communion. Tim Cremer led intercessions, Mary Otway read the lesson and Jenny and Duncan Bland served refreshments.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at the Holy Communion service on Sunday, taking the love and inspiration of mothers as his theme. He was assisted with the chalice by Barbara Grice. Martin Monkman played the organ and sidespersons were Keith and Jean Usher. Betty Flinton read the lesson from Exodus about Moses being placed in the bulrushes, and at the end of the service the ladies were presented with a posy of daffodils, after which coffee was served by Jean Usher and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be morning worship on Sunday, April 9, led by Barbara Grice. Sherburn C of E School’s Easter service will be held at St Hilda’s on Thursday, April 6 at 9.30am and will be led by the Rev Joe Kinsella.

Letters draw - G Robinson from Severfield won £180 in Saturday’s Sherburn FC weekly letters draw with the letters G, I and R. The prize fund this week will be £60.

Community Club - Bingo for cash prizes will be played at the Community and Sports Club on Saturday with eyes down at 8pm. The session is for over 18s only. The medium Debra will be at the club on Thursday, April 13 at 7pm. Tickets, which are available from behind the bar, are £10 advance or £12 on the door. The bar will be open but not while Debra is giving messages or readings. The club requires a general cleaner and anyone interested should phone 01944 710728 for more details.

Pathways Project - Members of the Pathways Project will be meeting on Saturday at 9.50am at the Pathways shed near Wild Wood. Residents are welcome to join them.

Methodist news - The Mothering Sunday service was led by Deacon Helen Webster. The congregation were welcomed to chapel by Christine Pickard. Ray Pickard was the offertory steward. Rainbows and Brownies who helped Deacon Helen re-enact the parable of the Good Samaritan. The children also distributed flowers to everyone. The Lenten Liturgy was read by Steve Branston and Jean Brown and the crown of thorns and purple robe placed on the cross. The lesson from the book of Ruth was read by Liz Aconley and Jean Brown read the lesson from the first book of John. Chris Cade was the organist and the audio visual equipment was operated by Christine Fenwick. The all-age worship next Sunday at 10.30am will continue with theme of the previous day’s Messy Church of the lost sheep and will be led by the worship team. Youngsters will be meeting for tea at 4.45pm at Messy church on Saturday to explore the parable of the lost sheep. To comply with safeguarding regulations, children should be accompanied by an adult.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Rev Canon John Manchester was the speaker at the Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, March 21. Jesus spoke seven times as He hung, crucified on the cross. Canon John took each sentence, using biblical references, meditations and prayers for the Guild to reflect on the agony and compassion which Jesus displayed. Four Passiontide hymns were sung concluding with Thine be the Glory. Olive Leng was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. It was the penultimate meeting of the guild for 2016-2017.The annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 4 and any suggestions for 2017-2018 session will be welcome.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The competition on Monday, March 20 was jointly won with 61.9 per cent by Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston and temporary pairing Conny Tate-Smith and Judith Porter.

WESTOW

Sporting memories - There is to be a Sporting Memories afternoon in Westow Cricket Club pavilion on Thursday, April 20 between 1pm and 3pm. The event is free and is open to everyone to come along, to chat and reminisce about their sporting memories, either playing or watching. Simon from North Yorkshire Sports will be taking along some sporting memorabilia, to help start off the conversations but those attending can take their own items as well. Tea, coffee and home baking will be available by donation. There is ample car parking, as well as disabled access and facilities.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - A domino drive to raise funds for the village hall will be held on Wednesday, April 5 at 7.30pm.

Quiz - A quiz evening in aid of village hall funds is planned for Friday, April 7 at 7.30pm. The entry fee includes a supper. It is for teams of up to four people.

WI REPORTS

Helmsley - The Helmsley branch of the WI met at the headquarters of the North York Moors National Park on Thursday, March 23. Chairperson Val Arnold welcomed 22members and two visitors after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The secretary Helen Robinson read out notices and correspondence. Mrs Arnold then welcomed the guest speaker, Margaret Dudley, a magistrate from Lancashire. Mrs Dudley gave out copies of a quiz to see just what members knew about the role and work of magistrates. She expanded on the answers, and also responded to the members’ questions. The competition for the best photograph on a Yorkshire theme was won by Helen Robinson. The hostesses for the evening were Anne Jones and Ann Burrell. The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday, April 27 April when the speaker will be Angela Harrison from the North Yorkshire Music Therapy Association.

Kirkbymoorside - Members of the branch met on Monday, February 6 and Monday, March 6. President Chris Martin welcomed 22 members and one guest in February when the secretary, Carol Smith, guided the meeting through the process of making special WI bunting. The branch managed to prepare 200 triangles for her to stitch to tapes. It was a productive and sociable session. Carol Bancroft won the competition, with Jan Tattersall second and Judy Parkinson third. Jan also produced birthday posies for Chris Martin, Judith Fletcher and Barbara Coram. Chris and Judith discovered they were born on the same day. The meeting in March was attended by 25 members and four guests. Angus Ashworth, who runs Ryedale Auctioneers, examined and discussed the varied items everyone had brought. He explained about the changing popularity of antiques, which affects value. The competition winners were his choice: Carol Bancroft came first, with Alwyne Thorpe second and Barbara Coram third. Birthday posies were presented to Judy Parkinson, Pam Walsh and Sue Sloan. A posy was also given to Angus for his wife, who had recently had twins. The branch is looking forward to its weekly walks, monthly Craft and Chat at the Penny Bank and the anniversary lunch. The next meeting is our open evening when David Swann will provide the entertainment. April is the first evening meeting of the year, starting at 7.15pm in the Methodist Schoolroom. Members will be producing a buffet.

Marton and Normanby – The March meeting was opened by the president, Jean Bell, who introduced Michaela, a representative of Macmillan Cancer Support. She gave an insight into the 100 years history of its foundation to how, in modern times, cancer affects one in two people throughout their lifetime. Macmillan’s new project for North Yorkshire will be the construction of a new building to help with cancer treatment and support. It is called the Sir Robert Ogden Cancer Centre and will be based at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. After supper notices were read out. The next meeting will be held in Marton Mission Room on Wednesday, April 5, at 7pm when the guest speaker will be Ian Kelly, who will talk about the tapestries at Nunnington Hall. Guests and new members are always welcome to join in on the night.

Thornton-le-Dale - The March meeting was attended by 25 members. Birthday cards were presented to Kath Alvey, Karen Hyatt and Edith Shepherd. Lists were available for members to sign for the spring lunch on Friday, April 7, the trip to RAF Fylingdales and the June outing and the WI quiz. Suggestions for workshops or day classes were taken. After the business, Margaret Smith, introduced Charlie Heap from the Bird of Prey Centre at Duncombe Park, Helmsley. He spoke about about how the centre began, and the work it undertakes with conservation and its own birds of prey; alongside rehabilitation work for injured birds which are to be re-introduced into the wild. Charlie brought an owl from the centre to the meeting. Charlie was thanked by Wendy Hutchinson. Refreshments, including cake and biscuits, were served by Florence Elgar, Betty Blythe and Shirley Pitt. The next meeting is on Tuesday, April 11, when John Kinghorn will talk about local smuggling.

YCA REPORT

Wombleton - Twenty-four members and one guest met on Tuesday, March 21 in the village hall at 7.30pm. Carol Bishop introduced the speakers, Roger Burnett and Sheila Johnson from Scarborough Environmental Community Project, formerly known as the Parks and Gardens department. They produced a slide show of Chelsea Flower Show 2016. Everyone learned about the preparations and setting up of the show. Roger is an RHS judge and enlightened us as to how that process works. Members were able to purchase spring-flowering bulbs and plants and cards. The vote of thanks was given by Norma Ward. Members are now looking forward to their annual lunch in Gillamoor and the next meeting on Tuesday, April 18, which will be a fundraising evening with entertainment by the Malarkey Singers.
