Amotherby

Events - Forthcoming events at the Parish Hall include: Saturday, April 8: Carers Support and St Helen's Church are holding another Jigsaw Festival, entry £2 (£1 refund on purchase of first jigsaw), children free, refreshments, tombola and competion; Easter Monday, April 17: table top and car boot sale, from 9am to 1pm. At 8pm there will be an old time and sequence dance with Faith Supper.

Appleton-le-Moors

History group - The annual general meeting was held in the village hall. It was noted that £1,600 of the HLF Grant Application has been spent; the majority of the remaining monies will be on the publication of a new book entitled Luminaries of Appleton le Moors. From the accounts it was seen that a substantial profit was recorded by the group year on year. This is in part due to the unspent part of the latest grant, but also due to income generated from two very successful talks and selling all the copies of Appleton and the Great War and A Bakers Dozen. It was decided that further copies of the two books would be printed due to their success. It was also decided that a further two formal talks will be held during the 2017/18 season and a formal book launch with refreshments will be held in September for Luminaries.

Community Sing Along - Another well attended first "Sing Along" was held in the village hall on Wednesday. Come along to the next meeting all welcome, which will be at 6pm on Wednesday, March 29.

Brompton-by-Sawdon

Church - The service at All Saints on March 26, will be at 8am. For those who would prefer a later time this Mothering Sunday, the choice is between St Stephen's, Snainton, at 9.30am, and St Matthew’s, Hutton Buscel, at 11am. Both will have a sung Eucharist celebrated by the Vicar.

Community Lunch - The Village Ventures Community Lunch was held last Wednesday and diners enjoyed Coq au Vin, followed by Bakewell tart and crème fraiche. The next lunch will be on Wednesday, April 19, at 12.30pm, in Brompton Village Hall.

Mischief Within Tent - For two nights in Brompton by Sawdon Village Hall - Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1 - Brompton by Sawdon Radio Players present a new comedy penned by Marcel Guillou. This year Mischief Within Tent invites you to join the residents of Lower Twaddle as they prepare for their annual village show. The Friday evening show begins at 8pm while the Saturday performance will kick-off at the earlier time of 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 to include a supper. They can be obtained from Marylyn Muir on 01723 850412. A licensed bar is available for the sale of wine and soft drinks. This is a show with adult humour so please leave the children at home.

Gardening club - The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 29, at 7.30pm, in the village hall. The guest speaker will be David Allison on A Year in the Life of a Vegetable Gardener. New members are always very welcome.

Cropton

Village Hall - The history and photographs of people and places in the village were on display in the hall on March 18. Visitors enjoyed tea and biscuits while discussing the good old days in the village. 

Gilling East

Band - Local band Holy Moly and The Crackers played a cracking gig at Gilling East Village Hall on Friday, March 10. The band, who describe themselves as a gypsy folk and roll band, played a mixture of their classic songs along with new tracks from their upcoming album. Their new album is being released next month and includes the new single Burning Back Wheel. As well as traditional rock band instruments the band also use the violin, accordion, trumpet and trombone to create their unique sound.

Sale - A bric-a-brac and secondhand book sale will take place at Gilling East Village Hall on Saturday, March 25, from 10am to midday. It will be in aid of Gilling East Village Hall Heating Repairs Fund.

Hutton-le-Hole

Pub quiz - There will be a quiz on Sunday, April 9, at 8.30pm, at The Crown Inn, Hutton-le-Hole, in aid of St Chad's Church, Hutton-le-Hole. Entry is £2, to include a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown Inn. All welcome. Please note the change of date.

Kirkbymoorside

Camera Club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive to hear a presentation by two members of the York Photographic Society (YPS). Alison Taylor gave an illustrated talk on landscape and waterfall photographs she had taken in various parts of Yorkshire, and Peter Baylis, the chairman of YPS, gave an account of the many photographic projects he had undertaken over the last few years. The next meeting at the club is on March 30, when a three-way digital image competition will be held between Malton CC, Scarborough CC and Kirkbymoorside CC.

All Saints - The Pilgrim Discipleship group meet each Wednesday in church at 7.30pm exploring the theme of Turning to Christ. All welcome. Please phone Rev Mark Brosnan for more details 01751 431452. On Monday, March 27, the annual parochial meeting will take place at the bowling club at 7pm. The next coffee morning in church is on Saturday, April 1, from 9.30am.

Lent Lunches - During Lent, Churches Together in Kirkbymoorside will be hosting a series of lunches on the theme of Expressions of Spirituality. Each Tuesday, a talk will be led by a speaker from a different tradition followed by a soup lunch at the Methodist church from noon to 1pm. Donations to Water Aid.

Tuesday Group - Members will meet on Tuesday, March 28, at 7.30pm, at the Methodist church room, with a guest speaker from Ryedale Special families. This will be an open evening and all are welcome. The leader will be Kath and the tea hostesses will be Mavis and Jean. A date for your diary is the Spring Fellowship Day at Helmsley on Thursday, April 28.

Moorside Bar & Club - Entertainment includes: Saturday, March 25, Darren Knight, starting at 8.30. Non members welcome to both.

Friday Night Orchestra - The orchestra meets in Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall, at 7.30pm, on Friday, March 31, for the their final open rehearsal and party. Free and open to all.

Marie curie - The Kirkbymoorside support group will hold it annual sponsored daffodil on Saturday, March 25. Sponsor forms available from June Cook on 01751 431160. It starts at Low Mill at 10am. There are two walks - a short route along the river of about three-and-a-half miles; and a longer walk of seven-and-a-half miles. Both walks are led by the North York Moors National park rangers. Car parking on the field will be free to walkers. Refreshments will be served all day in the band room.

Reading group - The Kirkbymoorside Library Reading Group has changed its times. The next meeting takes place on Monday, April 3, at 2pm, to discuss The Lie by Helen Dunmore. Thereafter, on the third Monday of the month, starting at 2pm, except for Bank Holidays.

Bridge club - At the latest game winning scores were low with close finishes. North/South was won by Sylvia and Mike Strickland with 52.6 per cent, Cynthia Metcalfe and Peter Small were runners-up with 52.3 per cent, a difference of just one point. Bo and Tony Simpson were top spot East/West on 58.3 per cent with Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale second on 57.4 per cent. a three point margin. Play of the week went to Tim and Irene Smith.

Kirkby Brass Band - It has been a very busy time for the players of all the Kirkbymoorside Brass Bands. On the weekend of March 4, it was the turn of the training sections as the represented the band and town at the Eskdale Festival. The training bands, beginner, learner and junior, joined forces to enter two categories, one aged year seven and under and one aged year 11 and under. While uncontested, both bands were awarded first place with some wonderful praise from the adjudicator. He was blown away by the breath of the band and the ability of the young players on show. March 12 saw the turn of the senior band. Following their sell out concert on February 18, where they performed Herbert Howells’ ”Pageantry”, the band took the piece to represent the band at the North of England Area Finals in Durham. The North of England Area is made up of bands from the Humber to the Scottish Boarders, across four sections with more than 30 bands competing across two days. Kirkbymoorside now compete in the highest division, the Championship Section, a huge achievement in itself for a band made up of homegrown players. The band were complemented on their performance with note made of the soloists, musicality and tuneful playing. It was also noted on the day how “young” the band on stage were. It was a day of firsts and lasts for the band. George Larson of Kirkbymoorside making his contest debut on third cornet held his nerves and did a great job. It was though, the last contest under the leadership of John Woodward. John has taken the band at every Area Finals for the last 25 years. He has lead the band to fantastic successes including on four occasions reaching the National Finals of the 1st Section. The band were delighted to have been placed sixth on the day, a wonderful achievement and tantamount to the work put in by the players, under the direction, leadership and mentor-ship of the John.

Menzown - Jim Pewtress gave a talk again, having given a great presentation last year on the birdlife of Ryedale. This time he was introduced by chairman Richard, as not just a birder, but a widely knowledgeable naturalist. Jim’s talk was again supported by slides and members found it fascinating. Thanks were given by Tony and endorsed by the members present. A day out at Elvington Air Museum is being arranged for June 12. Roy is building up a list of those interested. The next meeting is on April 10 when Fred Normandale will give an insight into the life of a trawlerman.

Nawton

Cake Stall - Friends of Nawton Primary School will hold a cake stall on Wednesday, March 29, at Towler's arch, Kirkbymoorside, to raise funds for the school. Please come along from 9am to buy a homemade cake/pie for tea.

Bingo - The committee of the Beckett Recreation Ground will hold a bingo on Saturday, March 25, in the village hall at 7.30pm.

Quiz sheet - Friends of Nawton Primary School have a spring quiz sheet out, which are available from local outlets in Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside or email friendsofnawtoncp@gmail. Entries to be returned by April 28 and results to be drawn at the school's Spring Fair on May 20. First prize £20 donated by Beadlam Farm shop and tearoom; second prize £15 donated by Desi Spice club and third prize £10 donated by Home Decorating Centre of Kirkbymoorside.

Bingo - The monthly prize bingo to raise funds for the hall takes place on Saturday, April 1, in the village hall, at 7.30pm. The bingo's are held on the first Saturday of each month.

Pickering

Stape Silver Band will give a concert in Pickering Memorial Hall on Saturday, March 25 at 7.30pm. The programme will include arrangements of popular music, light classical and traditional brass band music. The concert also features the training band and the Pickering Junior School brass class, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents in public Refreshments will be served at the interval and there will be a raffle. Tickets £5, pay at the door or at TV House in Pickering.

Domino drive – There will be a domino drive held on Thursday, March 30, in the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, Pickering, at 7.30pm, organised by the town’s cricket club.

Probus club – Members of the Vale of Pickering Probus Club and their guests enjoyed the anniversary lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel, Pickering, on Tuesday, March 14. Easter bingo – Friends of the Kirk Theatre will be holding a special Easter bingo night at the Kirk Theatre on Friday, March 31, eyes down at 7pm, doors open from 6.30pm. All profits will be split between Friends of Kirk Theatre and Pickering Guides, pay on the door per game.

Tuesday Group – There will be a meeting of the Tuesday Group at the Potter Hill Methodist Church, Pickering, on Tuesday, March 28, entitled, Laughter Lines, by Anne Pilgrim, at 7.30pm.

Ryedale Aquarist Society – Ryedale Aquarist Society met at the home of members Steven and Sarah Russell last week. David Marshall presented a talk entitled Guppies the Millions Fish. Round one of the Fish keeper of the Year contest was won by Marc Taylor-Olsson with a Labeo Bicolor. The next meeting of the society will be held on Wednesday, April 12, in the Mill Suite, Memorial Hall, Pickering, when guest speaker will be Ron Atherton of Hartlepool AS, who will speak on the subject of My favourite 20 aquarium fishes. The meeting will start at 7.30pm.

Henry Smith Band – Tickets are now on sale for the Henry Smith Band concert at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, Pickering, which will take place on Saturday, April 8, at 8pm. Meditation – Meditation in Pickering with Kadampa teacher Richard Brown takes place every Wednesday, until April 5, in the Friends Meeting House, 19 Castlegate, Pickering. The charge for these classes is £6 per class or £20 for four classes.

Weekly draw - Last week’s main prize of £ 450 in the weekly Pickering Town FC Weekly Draw was not won with the winning numbers 11, 36, and 20, so this week’s draw will be increased to £525, to join the draw costs just £1 per entry per week, to join call at Dunning Butchers, Bridge Street, Pickering, or contact any Pickering Town FC Committee member. Last week's draw was also made for the March consolation prize draw for £50 which was won by Mrs Ball of Pickering with her winning numbers 3 and 34. The weekly prize is £75 and if not won the prize increases by £75 per week until won. There is also a £50 consolation prize draw held on the first Monday in each month. The December monthly consolation prize draw will be held this week.

Rillington

AGM - The annual general meeting of the Rillington and District branch of the Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association, held in the village hall was attended by eight members. The chairman, Eileen Myers welcomed members back after the winter break and thanked members and officials for their support in 2016. Reports were received from officers on events attended during 2016. Attendance at meetings had ranged between nine and 16. The annual subscription of £15 is now due to the treasurer. The competition secretary presented her list of competition winners and their points earned. The trophy for most points was awarded to Babs Buckley with 40 points. The trophy for runner-up was won jointly by Sue Butler and Heather Thornes (32) and third was Valerie Gilbert (31). Officers elected to serve for the next 12 months were chairman and competition secretary Eileen Myers, vice-chairman Lynn Hodgson, treasurer Marjorie Grice, deputy treasurer Lorna Mastaglio, secretary and press secretary Sue Butler, assistant secretary and programme secretary Tracey Ireland and representative on village hall committee Valerie Gilbert. An ordinary meeting followed the AGM at which reports of the carol service at St Michael le Belfrey, York and Sherburn branches January Party were received. The February and March Newsletters had been emailed to 14 members and hand delivered to two. Three members expressed a wish to attend the AGM at Askham Bryan in May. Owing to lack of transport no members are able to attend the Scarborough Area Lunch. Following the business meeting members sat and chatte over a cup of tea. Marjorie Grice sold tickets for the raffle which she also won. At the April meeting Valerie Gilbert and Tracey Ireland will hold an Easter Bonnet workshop.

Parish council - The March meeting of the parish council was held in the church rooms. The minutes of the meeting can be viewed on the parish council website. A defibrillator has been purchased by the parish council and is situated on the outside wall of the village hall. Full instructions for its operation can be found on the cover.

Quiz - After a tie-break with Honeymooners, the winners of Jennie's Sunday night quiz at the Fleece Inn were Gary's Team. After a tie break with Sue's Crew the jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar. Mike Williams will be hosting a general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday, March 24, at 9pm. Entry £2 includes a hot supper and cash prizes.

Music - The fabulous vocalist and acoustic guitarist Marc Atkinson is playing at the Fleece Inn on Saturday, March 25, from 9.30pm.

Bingo - Due to the road works and possible closure of the A64 in the village, the prize bingo in Woodlands Community Centre scheduled for Wednesday, March 29, has now been postponed until April 26.

Seamer

Meeting - The Yorkshire Pelargonium and Geranium society meeting will take place at Seamer and Irton Memorial Hall on Sunday, March 26, at 2pm. The group will welcome Chris Smail of The Orchard Nurseries York. This will be Chris's first visit to the society. St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and Reader Judith Dean preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Kieron Middleton gave a bible reading and led the prayers, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Kate Middleton assisted with the distribution of communion, Clare Firth and Sue Johnson were sidespersons and Julie Stephenson served refreshments after the service. Judith Dean preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which was led by the vicar, Rev Andrew Moreland. Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Sue Grice read. Sue also played bass in the sung worship, which was led by John Grice (guitar) with Steve Raettig (keyboard) and John Taylor (drums). Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the Sunday Club. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service.

Methodist Church news - The service on Sunday was organised by members of the church who requested their favourite hymns, psalms and bible readings. The service was lead by Jan and Bert Blower and Margaret Neave accompanied the singing on the piano and Sheila Gray took the collection. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Bruce Clark.

Sherburn

Yorkshire Country Women - At the March meeting, the chairman welcomed 28 members and received apologies from four members. The guest speaker was Adam Collier with his Yorkshire Tales. Adam kept members thoroughly entertained with his poems, stories and anecdotes and hoped it wouldn’t be another five years before he was invited back again. The vote of thanks was given by Angela Holdsworth. The minutes of the February meeting were read out and approved and correspondence was dealt with. The summer outing was discussed and ideas put forward with a decision to be made at the next meeting. The menu for the area lunch at the Downe Arms was sent round and monies collected by Pam Heath. The competition was won by Barbara Grice and the raffle by Vicki Cornforth. Mrs Stephenson, Miss Heath and Mrs Ashton informed members that they would be standing down at the annual general meeting next month so new officials would be required.

St Hilda’s church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Mother's Day, Sunday, March 26, at 9am. when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate. All welcome.

Community and Sports club - Join the club on Sunday, March 26, for the monthly quiz night. Teams of up to five people and only £1 per person to enter. Lucky envelope game up for grabs. See you all 8pm. Join the club for something slightly different on March 31, from 8pm to late, for "The Lennon and Macca show". An evening of music through the years from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Free entry and everyone welcome. Thinking ahead to Easter Sunday April 16 when the club will be holding a car boot sale on the sports club field. Sellers from 11am, buyers from noon. Cars £5, vans/trailers £7. The bar will be open from open from noon and bacon sandwiches and refreshments available.

Football club Letters Draw - The letters drawn on Saturday, March 18, were A N U. As there was no winner so next week's total will be £180.

East Riding - Live music at the East on Saturday, March 25, at 9pm, from Hi Heel Sneakers. Come and enjoy the soul, rock and blues night.

Senior Citizen Luncheon club - Members all enjoyed a lovely lunch and then Deacon Andrew Carter told the group about the 500 mile walk that he and his wife Jane completed on the Camino Way pilgrimage of St James. They spent 35 days walking and meeting other pilgrims along the most beautiful route. A very interesting and beautifully illustrated talk, thank you so much Andrew for sharing your experiences. Birthday greetings were sung to Kim and Rosemary. Grateful thanks go to the team of helpers, Sandra, Kim, Judith, Janet, Angela, Kay, Christine and Ruth for the lovely scones.The next Luncheon club will be on Wednesday, April 19, and will be the Easter party. Methodist news - Liz Aconley was the hostess for the Tuesday Coffee Morning and kind donations for the Doppler Scanner for the surgery are greatly appreciated. Members "Gathered round the Word" for the Lenten prayer meeting led by Sandra Cade on Wednesday afternoon. Family Cinema Club enjoyed watching Pete’s Dragon. Thanks to Chris and Sandra Cade for organising this lovely family time. The next cinema club will be on Saturday, April 15, at 6pm. The Holy Communion Service for the third Sunday in Lent was led by Rev Denise Free. The Lenten Liturgy was read by Ruth, Kiara and India Heron and the money bag and 30 pieces of silver were placed by the cross. The welcomer was Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard was the Offertory steward. The Bible Lessons were read by Glennys Branston and Liz Aconley. Rev Denise administered Holy Communion assisted by Kim Canterbury. Organist was Chris Cade and the audio visual operator was Jan Tebb. Sandra Cade led the children’s work and they looked at the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer and made cards for Mothering Sunday. After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The All Age worship at 10.30am next week for Mothering Sunday will be led by Deacon Helen Webster and all are invited to come along.

Sinnington

People's Guild - Members enjoyed an evening of singing favourite Sankey hymns on Tuesday, March 14. Prepared by Jill Simpson, Stephen Ward led the prayers and hymns assisted by Karen Ward who gave a short history of the 10 hymns sung. Accompanying himself on his accordion, Gilbert Dobson sang the solo "When the mists have rolled away". Jill Simpson was the pianist. Tea, biscuits and Stephen's birthday cake were served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 28, at 7.15pm. The Market Weighton Waytes will make a return visit. All welcome. Supper will be served and the collection will be for the Guild funds.

Slingsby

Ladies Group - The speaker at the meeting held on Tuesday, March 14, was Roger Burnett, who gave a very interesting illustrated talk on Community Payback. A system where people on probation work with the council on various jobs of painting, building, joinery and gardening. The next meeting on Tuesday, April 11, will be held at 7.15pm in the Methodist hall. The speaker Sandra Piercy will give a talk on the A to Z of Quilting. All welcome.

Service - On Sunday, March 26, a United Mothering Sunday service will take place at The Methodist Church at 10.30am. It will b led by Rev Gordon and Julia McGuinness. There will be flowers given out and light refreshments afterwards. A warm invitation to everyone. Snainton

Playing field and village hall - The recent EASY Band concert was a resounding success and raised £570 towards the upkeep of the premises. Thanks are due to those who came along to support the event, performed by the extremely talented young musicians from the Scarborough Music Centre. Appreciation must also be recorded for the volunteers who worked tirelessly on the night and made the evening run so smoothly. A very good result – well done to all.

Concert - The next fundraiser will be the Paul Wheater in Concert on Friday, April 28, in the village hall, at 7.30pm. Paul sings a mixture of Country favourites, Jim Reeves classics, and well-known hymns. Tickets at £6 each are on sale and can be had either by phone John Beadle on 01723 859442 or on the door. Refreshments will be available.

Thornton-le-Dale

Bridge club - The result of the competition held on Monday, March 13 were: first place with 69.0 per cent were Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston and in second place with 57.7 per cent were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell.

Westow

Pavilion classes -Everyone is welcome to join in the fitness classes in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion, Wednesday and Saturdays, from 9.30am to 10.30am each day and open to everyone, of all ages and abilities. Spring fair - On Saturday, April 8, there is a Spring Fair in Westow, from 10.30am and 1.30pm. There will be more than 20 stalls, including cakes and home baking, a tombola and bric a brac in aid of the cricket club and pavilion. There will also be also tea, coffee and soup available. Domino drive - A domino drive will be held on Saturday, March 25, in the village hall, at 7.30pm, and on Wednesday, April 5, raising funds for the hall.

Quiz - A quiz evening in aid of hall funds will take place on Friday, April 7, at 7.30pm. Admission is £2.50, to include supper. Teams of up to four people.
