COMMUNITY champions are needed in Ryedale to help the hidden victims of domestic abuse in rural areas.

Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) is hosting an information session next week for local people who wish to find out more about becoming a volunteer IDAS champion.

IDAS champions raise awareness of domestic abuse by helping those who lack the knowledge and confidence to support. The scheme is funded by the North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Sarah Hill, chief executive officer of IDAS, said: “IDAS has supported more than 100 families in refuge accommodation in the last year and over 1,800 children and their families through our outreach services across North Yorkshire.

“While Ryedale, and other rural areas, see lower reporting of domestic abuse, we know that many cases go unreported and some people may experience additional barriers to reporting when living in a rural area.

“The champion scheme is a pioneering way to reach out into rural areas, change attitudes and beliefs about domestic abuse, and ultimately encourage people to have an open conversation that can lead to more people seeking help and support.”

Annika Dowson, an IDAS Champion from Helmsley, said: “Many people think that it isn’t a problem in places like Ryedale, but I can tell you that it is.

“I am lucky that I have not experienced domestic abuse, but I do know people who have and many more have approached me since running the fundraisers.

“Being a champion is important to me because getting support for domestic abuse can be a lifeline and no one should have to suffer at the hands of a loved one.

“From volunteering with IDAS, I have learnt so much about domestic abuse and can now confidently spot the signs and refer people for support.

“We all have a part to play in preventing domestic abuse, it’s about looking out for each other. I think this is a vital scheme to help people living in communities like ours where issues like this can often stay behind closed doors.”

The information session will take place on Thursday, April 6, at 3.30pm, in Helmsley Town Hall. To register to attend, email info@idas.org.uk or go to idas.org.uk
