A DAMAGED manhole cover on a busy road near York is believed to have punctured tyres on a number of cars this morning.

Vehicles heading towards York on the A1079, have suffered tyre punctures after driving over the manhole cover, near Wilberfoss, East Yorkshire.

One motorist who had a tyre punctured by the cover is Maria Lewis, from Market Weighton.

She has had to pay £90 for a new tyre to be fitted after her Ford Fiesta suffered a puncture at about 7.30am.

York Press:

She said: "I felt it, I heard the tyre go. I thought I had hit something. I looked in the mirror and couldn't see anything. The tyre pressure light came on. When I pulled up I had a flat tyre."

She took her car to the nearby York Road Garage, on the A1079, near Wilberfoss, to have a new tyre fitted.

"When I left the garage at about 9am there were about six cars on the grass verge," she said.

"It looked like the same thing had happened to them.

She added: "It was annoying more than anything. It could have been avoided.

"My tyre was £90. It could have been worse, the girl before me who it happened to as well had to pay £157."

A woman who works at York Road Garage claimed that about six people had stopped at the garage this morning for new tyres after suffering punctures.

She said: "They said it was caused by a manhole cover."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "We were called at 7.02am this morning reporting a damaged manhole cover on the A1079 near the Sutton-upon-Derwent turn-off.

"The cover is believed to have damaged a number of cars.

"East Riding Council attended and replaced the manhole cover."
