PUPILS at Ampleforth College have taken part in Student Volunteering Week.

The students planted trees at Ampleforth Plus, one of six social enterprises supported by Yorkshire based charity, Autism Plus. Students in Years 10 and 12 take part in weekly service activities, many of which involve volunteer projects in the local community.

A group have also been volunteering at Ampleforth Plus every Friday afternoon and have been working on projects such as making frames to protect trees, planting beech hedges and constructing micro polytunnels.

Richard Fenwick, horticulture manager at Ampleforth Plus, said: “We are in the process of creating 30, 20m x 3m allotment style plots which will, in time, allow ownership to co-workers who wish to grow their own crops and aid progression into employment.

“The help we receive from the Ampleforth College students is excellent and their contribution has really helped us to progress the project. They are a lovely bunch to work with and have shown dedication and enthusiasm, despite the poor weather conditions they sometimes have to endure.”
