MALTON School students hit the jackpot when their teachers asked for cash from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Normally the PTA funds three bids twice a year, but this time nine bids were all given cash, totalling £1,800.

They included bids for food technology equipment, athletics’ vests, netball posts, sixth form sofas and a sixth form reward scheme.

Sue Jefferson, chairman of the PTA, said: “It is a delight to see the bids spread so widely across school. We are looking forward to seeing everything in use. Knowing that we can offer our children extra experiences, just by parents coming along to the school’s fantastic events and enjoying the refreshments we sell is really great.”

FT teacher Justine Warner said: “Food technology is a fast changing subject with the new GCSE specification starting to focus on food and nutrition science.

“This means an increase in practical sessions being delivered across the school, including Key Stage 3.

“The fridge and equipment funded by the PTA will help towards making developmental dishes such as soups for Year 9.”

In recent years the PTA funds have provided special saws for the new DT suite, materials for an exciting microbiology project, water coolers and at the suggestion of students and rubbish bins in the outdoor quad area.

The PTA also contributed £3,000 to help build the drama studio and more than £900 to the music department for items, including a drum kit.

The PTA is open to all parents of children at Malton School. The money raised for the latest bids was mainly from selling refreshments and raffle tickets at school events such as the Christmas concert, celebration evenings, school production and sports day.
