A GAS leak at the repair works on Yorkersgate in Malton led to the temporary closure of a pub earlier today.

Engineers located the gas escape in the early afternoon, resulting in the New Globe pub closing its doors temporarily.

It has since re-opened, just after 5.30pm.

According to Northern Gas Networks (NGN) who are carrying out the ongoing gas mains replacement project, the team made the situation safe and are working to complete the repair as quickly as possible.

Mark Coe, network officer for Northern Gas Networks said: “The safety of our customers and engineers is our number one priority.

"Our engineers are working hard to repair the escape as quickly as we can, and in order to carry out this work it’s been necessary to temporarily close the pub.

"We’d like to thank customers for their continued patience during this essential repair work and apologise for any inconvenience experienced."

NGN is investing £225,000 to upgrade the ageing metal gas distribution network on Yorkersgate, replacing old pipes with new more durable ones.

The project, which is expected to last around 11 weeks, was planned in conjunction with North Yorkshire County Council Highways.

Work began on Monday, January 9 and is progressing on schedule as planned.

Anyone that smells gas or suspect carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

This line is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
