A MAN with Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is aiming to raise awareness of the condition with the launch of a charity single.

Ryan Swain, who lives in Malton with his partner Natalia and identical twin girls Ivy and Isla, who are nearly two, said he was 18 years old before he was officially diagnosed with ADHD.

The disorder affects behaviour and the three main symptoms are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Ryan, who has made a successful career as a presenter, said: “At school I was told I’d never achieve anything or do anything.

“I’ve battled my demons and over come my flaws to achieve more than some people have in their entire lives, performing on some of the nation’s biggest stages and working alongside some of the bigger names in showbusiness, while maintaining a family and raising thousands of pounds for various charities.

“Having ADHD can make it difficult to concentrate and I can get incredibly low as well as extremely high where I have so much energy I don’t always know how to channel it.”

Ryan, who is 26, said young people often faced a difficult time as ADHD could affect relationships and jobs.

“I’ve never had medication and have totally used my own strengths to overcome it and want to inspire others too,” he said.

“Mental health is something which is very heartfelt to me. I’ve made a lot of videos on parenting and life in general, but I’ve started making them about the effects of having ADHD and the funny side of it, which everyone with it could relate to.

“The response has been staggering. One of the videos had 50k shares and more than three million views. I get inundated with messages from parents, families that have been affected and other ADHD suffers.”

This month is Aspergers, ADHD and Autism month and Ryan is releasing a charity rap single about mental health awareness. He is hoping the campaign will raise funds and awareness for charities like MIND and he is also hoping to set up his own foundation for children and teenagers, as well as adults, with ADHD.

Ryan said: “The single is a track which I wrote and recorded in a day at Pulse Studio’s with Paul Pickering. It’s basically myself letting my heart and soul speak about something which has been both my best friend and worst enemy at the same time throughout my life.

“My goal is to raise awareness and make all children, parents and adults see the positives to having the condition.

“I really want my story to prove ADHD isn’t what people stereotype it to be, it’s so much more.”
