A FOOTBRIDGE that forms a link in a network of much-loved footpaths between Malton and Old Malton will have to be dismantled because the structure is becoming unsafe.

The network of footpaths running from Malton’s Orchard Field, through Lady Spring Wood and along the River Derwent to Old Malton was created more than 20 years ago by Ryedale District Council on land owned by the Fitzwilliam Trust Corporation.

The district council installed boardwalks and bridges to make access easier for everyone, but this infrastructure is coming to the end of its life.

The first part starting to fail is the bridge linking the riverside walk past Malton and Norton Rugby Union Club.

Roddy Bushell, estate manager for the Fitzwilliam Trust Corporation, which manages land in and around Old Malton, said: “After more than 20 years it is not surprising that all of this infrastructure is sadly reaching the end of its life.

“Ryedale District Council gave up its lease of the footpaths nearly two years ago and the private landowner is not able to shoulder responsibility for replacing the boardwalks and bridges, which is what is required if they are to remain safe for public access.

“There is a proposal for renewal of this popular network of footpaths as a suitable investment for public open space fund gained from recent residential development sites. I hope that will be the solution.”
