FILEY is preparing for a bonanza of events and activities as the Filey Festival gets ready to hit the streets.

Opening this Saturday, the excitement includes a stilt-walking Viking ship - one of just roughly 125 attractions.

The festival will last for nine days, from Saturday June 30 until Sunday July 8.

More than 100 of the events will be free of charge, including music, theatre, comedy, arts, and even a spectacular light show on the beach.

For the grand finale, the week will be topped off with a full day of open air music, fun and entertainment.

Secretary of the Filey Festival, Mrs Joyce Hoblyn, said: "Everything is set for a fabulous festival. What we want to see now is some sunshine and crowds of people coming along to enjoy what promises to be a fantastic nine days."

Jim Dillon, chief executive at Scarborough Borough Council, will open the festival on Saturday, with a guard of honour by Filey Sea Cadets.

And due to an extra cash boost from the Arts Council and others, organisers have this year been able to add a lot more to the traditional festival. Mrs Hoblyn said: "From craft sessions and story-time for little children, to alternative comedy and jazz for the grown-ups, there is something for everyone."

Full details can be found in the Filey Festival brochure which is on sale now for £1 at outlets including Filey Post Office in Murray Street, and Filey Tourist Information Centre in John Street.
