SCAMPSTON Walled Garden has been shortlisted for a national award.

The garden is also the only attraction, destination or business from Ryedale to be nominated in the Countryfile Magazine Award categories.

Alongside Scampston Walled Garden, the category of Garden of the Year has four other contenders - Hauser & Wirth in Somerset, Trebah in Cornwall, Great Dixter in East Sussex and Interewe Gardens in Wester Ross.

All have been chosen by Joe Swift, presenter of Gardeners’ World, journalist and garden designer.

The walled garden at Scampston was redesigned by renowned Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf in the late 1990s, and remains his largest private commission in the UK.

Chris Legard, owner of Scampston Walled Garden, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised by Joe Swift, an influential public figure in the gardening world, as one of the best gardens in the UK.

"Our small team work tirelessly at Scampston to maintain Oudolf’s unique design, and to ensure that the gardens offer a great day out for all.

“We would like to ask Yorkshire and Ryedale to get behind us and support us for this award by placing their vote.”

Scampston Walled Garden will now need to secure more public votes than the other four nominees to win the award before the voting closes on February 28.

Voting can be done online at countryfile.com/awards, or via post, sending in the form in the February issue of Countryfile magazine to BBC Countryfile Magazine, Tower House, Fairfax Street, Bristol, BS1 3BN. The winner will be announced in mid-March.

Scampston Walled Garden will re-open to the public on April 14. The gardens are open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm. For more information, visit scampston.co.uk or contact info@scampston.co.uk
