THE A19 in North Yorkshire has reopened after it was closed in both directions due to a tanker fire.

The incident occured around 11am between the A684 (Ellerbeck) and A61 (North Kilvington).

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue tweeted: "Several crews are on scene at a tanker on fire on the #A19 near #Northallerton. A19 closed in both directions currently."

Police are advising motorists to use other routes where possible and avoid the area.

Motorists reported on social media of "gridlocked" conditions in Northallerton and congested back roads around the town and Thirsk as motorists take alternative routes.

One traveller tweeted: "Whole of Northallerton in gridlock. Back roads hell. Traffic queuing between N'ton and Thirsk as far as Thornton-le-Moor."

North Yorkshire Police tweeted at 2pm: "Full closure on #A19 nr South Kilvington. Please avoid the area and use an alternative route. The road will remain closed for several hours."
