SHOEBOXES filled with Christmas gifts are on their way to disadvantaged children around the world.

Hairdressing and beauty students from The Academy in Norton and Scarborough donated more than 40 boxes for Operation Christmas Child, which is organised by Samaritan's Purse International Relief.

Jackie McGibbon, attendance officer at The Training Academy, who coordinated the charity shoe box appeal, said: "The shoeboxes will go to children who would not usually receive any gifts this Christmas so it is wonderful that so many people have donated to the shoe box appeal. Thank you to everyone."

Lindsay Burr, Academy director, added: "The Training Academy has a long tradition of supporting local and national charities throughout the year. I enjoyed putting together my shoe boxes and hope that all the children who receive our gifts are brought some happiness at this time of year."

Pupils at Kirkbymoorside Primary School collected 86 shoeboxes filled with gifts and essential items.

Headteacher Gill Hardacre said: "Thank you to everyone who sent in donations for our shoebox appeal. They are now on their way to children in poverty stricken countries all over the world. Hopefully they will make 86 children smile this Christmas."
