AN ELDERLY man has died in hospital following a crash in which a car drove the wrong way along the A64.
The 76-year-old local man was the driver of a dark Toyota Corolla which was seen driving in the wrong direction along the A64 at about 6.20pm on Saturday.
It is understood to have driven into the A1079 slip road at Grimston Bar, when the car collided with a green Mercedes A class about to join the dual carriageway.
Both drivers were taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries.
Police had yesterday said the 76-year-old was in a critical condition but have since clarified he died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 37-year-old man from Leeds, remains in Leeds General Infirmary.
The road was closed for a number of hours after the crash.
Police are appealing for witnesses who saw the collision or either of the vehicles prior to it, to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for the Major Collison Investigation Team at Tadcaster Police Station or email mark.mullins@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk quoting ref 12160218502.
