A WACKY golf day is being held at Malton and Norton Golf Club on Saturday to raise funds for the Rob Stephenson Trust.

Robert Stephenson died after being struck by a taxi on a night out in York in March.

The 21-year-old, from Pickering, was a rugby player with Malton and Norton Rugby Union Club and a cricketer with Thornton-le-Dale Cricket Club. He was in the third year of an agriculture degree at Newcastle University, with honours in agronomy.

Rob’s parents, Patrick and Nicki, and elder brother Sam, set up the Rob Stephenson Trust to help young people take part in sport.

Nicki said the golf day would be hosted by the club captain, Lesley Mather and Dan Gillbank and the course professional Michael Brooks.

"We have nearly 200 entrants to play for great prizes of golf weekend breaks to donated Taylor made golf bags," she said.

"While putting with a hockey stick and teeing off with a cricket bat may seem wacky, on the 18th we are going to be hitting through some rugby posts. Rob would have loved it."

Supporting the event are people from Ryedale, as well as Cumbria, Lincoln, London, Cambridge and Scotland. Teeing off is from 8am to 2pm with play continuing throughout the day.

Nicki said: "The Trust is currently working on a project to send rugby kit to two charities that work in the townships in Cape Town, together with a large project at Thornton Dale Cricket Club for their nets and scoreboard, where Rob spent many hours in the summer months.

"Special thanks also go to Helmsley Young Farmers that donated a large sum from the Ryedale After Show Party and Hovingham Cricket Club.

"Next year we already have planned a series of events from rugby games, to walking and even an agricultural ‘Tough Mudder’ with Cedar Barn, Pickering."
