A 20-year-old motorist from Selby has been banned for a year after driving at up to 120mph on the bypass.

Liam James Turton, from Thorpe Willoughby, was found guilty of dangerous driving by York Magistrates' Court this week and also ordered to pay £485 in fines and costs.

North Yorkshire Police said officers from the Roads Policing Group were on patrol near the Wishing Well roundabout at just before 9pm on April 16, when they saw a Ford Fiesta ST driven by Turton travelling at speed.

A spokesman said Turton was seen overtaking multiple vehicles by using the hatched area in the centre of the road, "hitting speeds of between 100mph and 120mph", and narrowly missing a gritter lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

He overtook another vehicle at about 100mph, and went all the way round the next roundabout, intending to retrace his route, before the RPG officer stopped him.

Traffic Constable Mark Patterson, who was the arresting officer, said: "Turton's driving was completely inappropriate for the public road. He showed no regard for the safety of himself, other road users or the passengers in his vehicle by travelling at speeds in excess of double the limit for the road.

"The sentence shows that North Yorkshire Police Roads Police Group and the courts take instances of dangerous driving very seriously and clearly demonstrates that we will pursue, arrest and prosecute anyone who decides to drive in this manner."
