I AM not sure I made the most of my opportunities at Archbishop Holgate’s but we had great teachers and a veneration for tradition and manners that is sadly lacking in society today.
Like most Old Boys I was appalled that a respected school that had existed since the 1500s was closed down to become a co-ed comprehensive.
It is the usual socialist way of downgrading things to make everything equal when of course people are not equal and there are success and failure stories in all schools.
I welcome the return of grammar schools and the aspiration to go to one that pupils can have.
I think of my grammar school days with great affection and count my blessings at having gone to a good one.
