A MAN has been arrested after an elderly woman was killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the northbound carriageway of the A19.
The southbound carriageway was temporarily shut to allow an air ambulance to land after the accident, and the northbound carriagway has recently re-opened following the crash at 10am.
The accident occurred between the A684 and A172 (Cleveland Tontine), near the turn for Mount Grace Priory, on the route between Thirsk and Middlesbrough.
The incident involved three vehicles and was attended by Yorkshire Air Ambulance, police, fire service and ambulance service.
The collision involved a silver Skodia Fabia and a white van, and police have confirmed as a result of the collision, the driver of the Skoda, a woman in her eighties sadly died at the scene.
The driver of the van has been taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either of the vehicles involved prior to the collision, to get in touch. Anyone with any dashcam footage is also asked to get in touch.
